Guest guest Posted December 9, 2005 Report Share Posted December 9, 2005 Hi Barb, Colter is on day 30 of 500mg twice a day and is red cheeks and rashes are always there. More now than ever. The red cheeks just started about a week ago, but rashes come and go all the time (this is nothing unusual for my son with or without Valtrex) His nights sweats are more profuse and our Doc thinks its viral. Our homeopath thinks its metals and his remedies. I guess will see.... As for behavior he is in a much better place than last week when I posted how awful he was doing. Not any huge progress, but overall back to normal and talking(or scripting) up a storm. Better than no speech at all. Spinning and hand-flapping are almost gone as well. I think most has to do with his recent IV on progress, but I'm still giving the Valtrex and plan to for awhile because I think Valtrex is a big contributor in his healing. He just started the MB12 Nasal spray today. I will post if I get any " Wows " . Just recently my son accepts the Valtrex without being forced to drink it in pear juice. " We are learning more and more about this rash that many folks are observing. I suspect that in some cases it's metals. My son had this rash as well. It moved around some and then subsided when the " regressive healing " stage ended. Red bumps is not a typical side effect of Valtrex. This is something specific to our kids, and in my opinion it can only be one of 4 things. 1. A viral rash 2. Metals excretion from lowering adenosine or improving liver function (which we have found evidence in the medical literature that, that may be the case). 3. Raised levels of bacteria and fungus (in those children not on antifungals. 4. Something I'm not smart enough to realize yet. Guest guest Posted December 9, 2005 Report Share Posted December 9, 2005 In order to get him to take the Valtrex we literally have to hold him down (kicking and screaming)...sometimes it takes two attempts...but we are getting it down...he is a very headstrong little guy...so maybe it will get better over time...I was just wondering if my kid was the only one who hated the taste this much! Guest guest Posted December 10, 2005 Report Share Posted December 10, 2005 Curious, did you start the nasal B12 also? We are 3 wks into the nasal B12 and have had Red Cheeks for a week now. We have been on valtrex for 15 mos. and never had a red cheek reaction, however for the first six months on valtrex did get red dots on trunk and legs intermittenly. They looked like pimples (chicken pox like). We don't get them anymore. Last week I introduced Coconut Water from the BED diet, I thought the red cheeks were an allergic reaction to that, but when I pulled it, over 5 days now, the red cheeks remain. My deduction is detox. We did a round of ALA for the first time in 3 wks. the wknd the red cheeks appeared and his OCD returned, which for him is heavy metals dumping. Possibly the nasal B12 is helping with the detox. He resists even taking 1/2 of a tablet because of the taste where the tab is broken. This is a child who takes unflavored CLO without a problem. We just began Valtrex on Saturday afternoon and by the next day, my son had the appearance of red cheeks and major cold symptoms. He receives IVIG monthly and I suspect he had a small cold and minor cough last week (he is asymptomatic because of his IVIG so I just assume). By Monday his cough was very intense and his nose running, unlike any cold we've seen in some time. My big concern is the slapped cheek look - I am pregnant and it's a common symptom of Fifth Disease which can cause some issues for an unborn child. I don't want to stop the Valtrex because I actually think it's more than likely causing these symptoms but if my unborn baby is in jeopardy, I should go talk to my OB (and I'll get a blood test to see if I am immune to the virus). Some reassurance that other kids have had the bright red cheeks would be great....no rash has spread downward just yet. I would put my money on that, but when your pregnant you need to be as careful as you can so I respect your concern. Keep us updated.
