Guest guest
Hi, Hilda, Just something to note...I would be sure to try to get a good augmentative alternative communiation (AAC) assessment before you purchase any device for your son. Just like you wouldn't want to put together a behavior plan without first conducted a functional behavior assessment, you don't want to purchase or start paying to try a bunch of different devices without a comprehensive assessment. An assessment will collect all of your son's needs and use his strengths to determine which of the thousands of devices currently available would most closely meet his needs. There is probably a device out there that will work just great for him, but it would be best to narrow down the options before you " rent " (trial) or purchase one...many of them are VERY expensive, and you want to get the most bang for your buck! Also, FYI, most companies who sell these devices will 1) let you trial the device for 3 weeks to 6 weeks for a fee, and 2) do a real sales job to convince you that their device is best for your child regardless of what the child's strengths and needs are. Just be sure to use care when pursuing this option! It is a far UNDERutilized support that many, many individuals with autism would greatly benefit from! nna-- nna Bond, M.Ed., ATPSpecial Education ConsultantAutism SpecialistRESNA certified Assistive Technology Practitioner
