Hi everyone, Thinking of buying a handheld steam cleaner to help with chemical free cleaning. Never used one and wondered how well they work? Also, do they kill mould? Would be interested in anyones experiences, good or bad and any make/model you might recommend. Thanks. Sue

I think they are good on walls painted with eggshell and good on tiles. I find

they take the paint off woodwork. I don't think much of their performance for

getting stains out of carpets - and the heat felts the wool. I ruined my

laminate flooring using a steam cleaner. So they are good in the right place but

they can be destructive in the wrong place.Useful for getting limescale off

around taps.

Iv'e had a steam buggy for years, really wouldn't be without one, but agree with Margaret watch out for stripping paint and it can lift laminate.

I have had a polti steamer for the past 10 years.. good though in a hard water area.. you have to empty it each time and add the limescale drops every time.. I often add a few drops of essential oil.. especially like lemon...

I think that if you had a lot of mould and used it you may initially release a lot of mould spore so might need to take precautions like well ventilated area and them good vacuum later to lift any settled spore.

Got mine in Argos, great on my real wood floor (when I had money) rubbish on laminate in playroom (when I became poor!!) great on things like curtains and soft furnishings, doesnt get out stains but at least you know they are clean. Hose bit flimsy so you can't really scrub at something which it isnt really intended for - should just rely on the power of the steam.  Haven't tackled the bathroom mould for the reason Tracey mentioned as I have windowless bathroom.
