Guest guest Posted June 30, 2004 Report Share Posted June 30, 2004 Hi, Dawn! I'm very new here, too, maybe 3 days or so, so welcome to you from another newbie! I have read quite a few of the old posts and have learned a lot already. It is hard having no support. We have told my parents very little (they live in another state), and my father in law who lives in our area sees a little about what's going on but doesn't get it. He has a lot of suggestions, like maybe is just embarassed because he...whatever. It is good to know that each of us going through this is not alone, even if we live in different places we can come here for some fellowship and understanding. Like you, Dawn, I would like to know what causes this OCD (I understand some of it on a surface level, the chemicals, etc.) and WHY so many kids are going through it. Why do they spit? Why the rituals? What triggers all the bad thoughts about God and religion? It all seems so weird. It's not like all our kids get together and decide they are all going to spit all the time. Guest guest Posted June 30, 2004 Report Share Posted June 30, 2004 Kim, I agree about how strange OCD is-with the common themes, etc. If one weren't very science-minded, one would think it was a supernatural event, because of the symptoms. That's why it's so easy for us to talk about OCD by using words like " the monster " , etc., because OCD seems to be its own entity. I suppose it's similar to the way the " normal " brain works, though, when you look at it scientifically. We all have similarities in themes of thinking when our brains operates normally. For example, we all have the basic needs-to feel secure and safe from harm, to be cared about, to eat, (Maslow's hierchy-not in the correct order). As humans, we all load up in buses to go watch two teams hit a ball across a stadium, and then when our team hits the round object with a large stick, the whole crowd goes wild!! That doesn't really make sense on the surface, either. Anyway, I guess the same is true in the minds of people with OCD. There are similarities due to the region the brain is affected.
