Guest guest
Lots of dogs have noise fear. In fact most of my agility friends dogs (because they are Border Collies) have issues and have had success with these. thundershirts (see link below) ... Owning hunting dogs I had a different issue... mine think thunder is shot guns and want to go outside to make sure they get the birds.. I show them once that it is just rain then they go back to bed.http://www.thundershirt.com/?utm_medium=affiliate & utm_campaign=googleaffiliatenetwork & utm_source=GAN_k303300judyFrom: Donna M-P To: exercisevideos ; FitFirmies Sent: Mon, February 28, 2011 10:18:03 AMSubject: Monday - bike, pilates Hi -Rough night last night - we had our first T-storm since the summer. My dog is petrified of t-storms so I had to take her out of the bedroom and sit up with her for awhile - it is so sad, she trembles, looks terrified and doesn't know what to do w/ herself in general. As a result, I was dragging butt this morning and opted for the recumbent bike instead of a FIRM workout - so I did 30 min on the recumbent followed by 20 min of stretching and Pilates type exercises w/ Caribbean workout (i like these for quick sessions that mix things up differently). Better than nothing and the bike makes me sweat b/c I go fast and vary the resistance from easy to hard. Tomorrow my plan is to do my Firm Turbocharge Cardio, 20 min of kickboxing w/ Violet Zaki and 20 min of Pilates w/ McGee! Hope everyone has a good Monday!Donna
Guest guest
That's another similar thing/same concept. This was actually a vest with weights sewn in. The pressure on the muscles provides sensory input to the nervous system and helps the person (or animal) feel more "grounded" and, in many cases, more secure physically. Guest guest
Yes, I've seen Temple Grandin's story and read things about her and written by her, quite the inspiring woman! Thanks for sharing this story, Carolyn! Re: OT- dogs and thunderstorms...Monday - bike, pilates > This is great! Guest guest
oh i didn't know this thread was going there LOL. yes i have heard to temple grandin. i might actually one of these days see the movie based on her life(netflix and both libraries are on wait list for it). when i get more free time to read i would love to get some of her books. so no giving away the big plots LOL. the " squeeze " thing i know is common with sensory integration but scientifically i never learned it to explain it to ppl but viola loves " squeeze hugs " from dad. he is the only one that can pull it off. we also have a habit of can't going to sleep unless we are buried under all 200+ stuffed animals. i am just starting to learn a little left/right brain stuff in reference to ADHD but i think on some levels it applies to autism as well. all the balance and unilateral exercises and stability ball. i talked to a lot of students at school that have learning disabilities and have used these techniques to help them. Guest guest
Interesting! I'm going to give this Thundershirt a try - it is guaranteed so if it doesn't work I can always send it back. Knowing my weird dog, it will probably make her MORE anxious! But all the other 'remedies' seem to be sedatives and unless you wanted your dog to be doped up all the time, you would have to know when a t-storm was coming so as to get them medicated in time. Guest guest
We did a lot of right brain/left brain exercises with when he was young. He had terrible balance issues, couldn't cross over midline, had trouble with body in space issues (so the squeeze stuff really helped with that a lot). I think I've seen the Temple Grandin movie or at least I know I've seen parts of it. Fascinating stuff too. (For those that don't know, my almost 13 year old was diagnosed with sensory integration dysfunction when he was 5 and we went through several years of occupational and vision therapy to help him. He's doing extremely awesome now, was released from special education services earlier this school year even. Still has SID but it does not interfere in his functioning now, it did in a huge way when he was little, except that some of his behaviors still drive me nuts but no one else!) Guest guest
Just another thought as I looked at the website... I'm not sure if these work (or at least they say they do) because of the way they're strapped on or because of the weight of the vest or both. The website isn't clear about that at all. I would wonder if they're relying on the pressure and that if it really is continuous even with a dog moving about possibly loosening the velcro. Anyway, I sent my friend and email and will let you know what she says. Re: OT- dogs and thunderstorms...Monday - bike, pilates > This is great! Guest guest
Yep. When we weren't sure what was going on with DS when he was little, our ped sent us to a behavioral ped. Our doc is awesome but she felt like a behavioral ped would be able to not only diagnose possible medical issues but especially help us with parenting/behavioral issues as necessary. (That doc helped us some, gave us some good ideas but mostly told us to keep doing what we were already doing, which was reassuring too since we thought we were doing okay but also felt so lost, she especially helped because she noticed a lot of motor issues and sent us for OT and PT evaluations and that's what eventually led to the sensory diagnosis.)
