RE: OT-OSX Macs are virus free - I can solve the mystery

Hi Everyone and ,

I think part of the misunderstanding (why everyone thought you were

infected)comes from what happens when a virus gets sent. Your computer

(not Mac of course) can get infected with a computer virus. The virus

silently lives in your computer and you are completely unaware of its

presence (unless it acts up or your virus protection catches it). Then

when you access the internet, the virus is programmed to steal your

email addresses. Once it does this it sends out silent emails that you

aren't even aware of by selecting names or variants of names from your

address book. The virus then sends random emails to random people that

it picks from your address book. Those people don't really send the

emails only the infected person's computer does.

Then your fellow friends and family get an email from you that have the

virus attached. When they get this email with your email address on it,

they erroneously believe you sent it and that your computer is infected.

Your internet provider or email provider might even catch the virus

first (like mine does) and will tell you that you had a virus sent to

you by the spoof address. Many times your internet/email provider then

sends an email to the spoof email address to them that they sent out a

virus when in fact they didn't.

I believe (but might be wrong) the email virus that came is 's name

was a mydoom variant. This is a virus that steals web addresses and you

can read all the technical details about how it works here:

http://www.grisoft.com/virbase/virbase.php?lng=us & type=web & action=view & q

virus=086fda5c5c9e7000

So in the end what this means is that someone else on the Yahoo list is

infected with this virus. Everyone who owns a PC should update their

virus protection software and scan. If anyone can remember the exact

name of the virus sent, let me know. There is mostly likely a special

program made to extract that virus from your computer. I'll look it up

if someone sends me the name.

If you don't have antivirus protection then get some. I used AVG Free

Edition found here: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

The trick with antivirus software is to update daily and to scan

regularly. I update and scan everyday to keep up with the wicked world

of viruses. I also use lots of anti-spyware programs to keep other

nastys out. Just holler if you want more info!

Hoppe this helps.

That's right the W32/Bagle...this link, http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100965.htm,

has more information on it.

And Symantec has a removal tool here:

I also apologize about the confusing explanation I sent. There were too

many “you’s” in it.  If I confused anyone

just let me know!
