Guest guest
I know how hard it can be to get the right dx. We're still searching and it is so hard. I will hold a good thought for them; I hope someone has ideas.... Ann OT strange kid with no dx This is very off topic, so apologies. One of the people who lives in my community is a school nurse, and she comes to me when she has a question about ASD's and help for parents. There is a child in one of her schools who has some very bizarre behavior. He does very odd things, but never more than once. One day, he will go around the room and touch everyone's head, the next he licks them, the next he goes and pees everywhere. This child is 10 years old, and has a dx of bipolar and possibly something else, but the mother is still searching for the right dx and the right treatment. He is currently on Risperdal, and it helps. This child is very social, makes good eye contact, and can hold an intelligent conversation. The mom is thinking Asperger's, but I don't think so. He is just too strange, and never repeats a behavior. He doesn't have an obsession. Anyone have any ideas about what's going on with this kid? I've never heard anything like it, and I'm not an expert in anything but my own kid. This mother is at her wit's end because she gets no sleep and can't home school him any longer. She fell asleep 3 times in the interview with my friend, and is a danger to herself and her kid from lack of sleep and anxiety. Thanks Liz Many frequently asked questions and answers can be found at <http://forums.autism-rxguidebook.com>
Guest guest
Liz, The obvious question is: Has the mother and child (and father, etc.) had an extensive series of sessions with a good family therapist? That would help a great deal in developing a more refined dx and a useful treatment program. Jack son wrote: This is very off topic, so apologies. Guest guest
I'm not so sure that a diagnosis is totally necessary although it does help to get services. If they can even use 'Asperger-like' to get appropriate services that should help. It does sound like he needs a small class with enough adults to support the required behavior for learning. I have one boy, who was in a residential placement for 3 years, who had a variety of diagnosis from bipolar, depression w/suicidal ideation, oppositional defiance, ADHD, attachment disorder, PDD-like, possible Tourettes - but, a lot of professionals would shake their heads at these possibilities. He was very aggressive and responded well to Risperdal - that kinda kept him under control. This child (of mine) was very engaging socially but needed control and would do whatever necessary to maintain that control (over adults and other children). What worked best for him was a diet - without dyes, preservatives, soy and casein (seems that he can tolerate gluten). Lynette son wrote: > This is very off topic, so apologies.
