My son is 10 and he is hypothyroid and on the spectrum. I am also hypothyroid. When he was nine, his TSH was a 9. We tried Naturethroid and it made him vomit every time he took it, even when we reduced the dose. He is on Synthroid now. His TSH went up from a 1 to a 2.5. So we upped his dose of Synthoid, not by much. His crying, anxiety have seemed to go down, but if it shoots up again, I will try Armour. Great to know you can get it in liquid form. My son doesn't swallow pills, so he chews the synthroid. Not bad, just chalky.Have any of your physicians mentioned autoimmunity in your kids and maybe a link to their gutt, or are they saying it's hereditary? I'm trying to figure that one out. Many ASD kids have thyroid issues. I have hypothyroidism and so does my 10-year old ASD son. Dr. Pothuluri in Humble (www.clinicforautism .com) diagnosed my son after a blood test and prescribed Armour (which is what I take through another VERY mainstream doctor, Dr. S. Bond off S. Kirkwood). You can get Armour in liquid format at a compounding pharmacy like Katy Pharmacy, but the pills are very small if he can swallow pills. The problem with pills for us is that you need to take the medication away from food so you can't hide it in there. Let me just also add that I tried Synthroid and it is horrible compared to Armour. Synthroid, as the name implies, is a synthetic and only regulates T4 (or it could be just T3) while Armour regulates both T3 and T4. It is a night and day difference between the two for me. Definitely go for Armour or Nature-throid. Most doctors want to prescribe Synthroid and like said, most mainstream doctors don't think it's an issue if the numbers aren't too far out of range. You need a doctor that is a bit more cutting edge/alternative. Try this site to find a doctor: http://www.thyroid- info.com/ topdrs/armour. htm Thanks,Sandy H.From: starsrocket <LAUC174aol (DOT) com>To: Texas-Autism- Advocacy@ yahoogroups. comSent: Thu, July 22, 2010 5:43:17 AMSubject: [Texas-Autism- Advocacy] Re: Thyroid problems? Hi,Yes my son has thyroid issues, diagnosed when age 4, he is now 12. Are you sure the TSH is low? That would indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroid) . A high TSH would indicate an underactive thyroid (hypOthyroid) . My son is hypo and responded well to treatment ( we use natural dessicated thyroid called Armour Thyroid ). It will be difficult to find a doctor to treat if it is not too far out of range. Get the labs checked again with a full panel(free T4 and free T3 along with autoantibodies. ) Feel free to write me offline for more info - I am running out the door right now! He probably needs treatment if he has nodules.>> Doesanyone else here in the Houston area have a kiddo on the spectrum and has thyroid problems?> > Just got labs back on DS: low TSH and low Vitamin D. He also has a slightly enlarged thyroid. Docs have found the slightly enlarged thyroid for the past two years but no one would do the labs until now. Doc forgot to ask for T3 (T4 is within normal limits). I'm thinking about getting the T3 done on my own before next labs are ordered for three months from now. This might explain some problems with school....> > We are taking the methylated vitamin B6, B12 and Vitamin D. > > On a side note, DS has a lump on his leg times about 2 weeks that really isn't resolving. Ortho doc is watching it, and I'm concerned that it's related to the thyroid issues.> > We're going on day 2 where he's up til about 2 in the morning pratically vibratingall day long. > > If anyone has any experience, suggestions, or doc recommendations here in Houston I'd appreciate it.> > Thanks> > ~Crystal>

While The College Living Experience (CLE) does a great job, the cost is out of the reach for most families as it costs approximately $33,500(2009 rates) a year for their services plus the cost of attendance to the individual institution. The CLE is not a DARS provider(The Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services) consequently, there are no outside funding opportunities to pay for their program. As a start, I would suggest reading the book "Realizing the College Dream with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome", A Parents Guide to Student Success by Ann Palmer ISBN-13: 978-I-84310-801-6 ISBN 10: 84310-801I would look at the following college programs and review the support services that they provide:Midwestern State-Wichita FallsTexas State University-San MarcosMarshall University Huntington, West VirginiaMidwestern State provides many of the support services without additional fees charged by Marshall and the CLE program so I would check them out first. Be certain to do an intake with DARS right away as they can assist in tuition, books and room and board if the program is a specialized program to help a student obtain employment. Midwestern State's program would qualify for this scenario. That does not mean that if you opt for another institution, DARS is off the hook. If you have problems with this agency Advocacy Inc, will assist. You should start the intake process with DARS including assessments when the student attains his 17th birthday. I would also look into joining AHEAD IN Texas http://www.ahead.org/affiliates/texas\ which is an organization of the staff members of the colleges office of disability services. These are the individuals that your child will ultimately have to work with once he is in the respective university. One other thing to keep in mind. Your child has been protected under IDEIA for programming while in the public schools. Once he graduates, he will be protected under either 504 (public) or ADAAA (private). The requirements are much different in that the institutions may not discriminate and must provide "reasonable accommodations" for individuals with a disability. If he encounters problems with the institution in obtaining a reasonable accommodation, feel free to contact me for assistance. I wish you well.Louis H. I looked over the website, and I really like the idea of air abrasion filling preparation and there are lots of good testimonials, but they say they don't like the parent to come back with the child. I need to be there because of the horrendously horrid past dental care my child received. I have no trust now. What do you all think of this policy? Do you accompany your children?Love and prayers,Heidi NWe also go to Dr Sherwood. He and the entire staff are really good with kids who have a range of special needs and sensory issues.
