Guest guest
Well Maureen let me start by saying that there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is not an oncoming train! For roughly the first year of my new responsibility I worked 60 or more hours/week with most of that time devoted to Rehab. There were also weekend issues which added more hours. However, I instituted an on call system (I participate in the rotation) which took care of the weekend issues. During the week has decreased to a normal workweek of about 50 hours (I also oversee the Lab). As I mentor the supervisors so that they handle more problems independently, my workload has changed to deal with major concerns for the department. This is the key to keeping your head above water - DELEGATION! In the beginning, there are so many needs to address; e.g., policies, procedures, interdepartmental and interdisciplinary issues (getting them to work together and helping everyone to understand that (forgive me!) PT is not in charge of everything). It can be overwhelming - but not impossible. Repeat to yourself daily that you can only handle a certain amount at a time - prioritize and do not let anyone make you feel guilty. Good Luck! Lucille Byrne Administrative Director Pathology/Rehabilitation Jeanes Hospital Temple University Health System Philadelphia, Penna. 19111 hospital restructuring Hello, I am a physical therapy manager in a health network which includes a 200+ bed hospital, in a suburb of Chicago. Our department of 30+ professional staff provides care in a number of settings (acute care, occupational health sites, outpatient satellites, school and DD facility contracts, etc.) Hospital administration is considering restructuring from a discipline-based leadership structure to a product-line leadership structure. This would entail PT, OT and Speech clinicians potentially reporting to supervisors and a manager outside their discipline. Can you give me some information about resources, including contact persons at other facilities who have successfully implemented such a product-line management model? I would love to be able to learn from others' experiences. Thanks so much, in advance, for your assistance. Sincerely, Maureen Windmoeller, PT MacNeal Health Network Berwyn, Illinois Email: mwindmoe@...
