3 Things You Didn't Know Could Trigger Eczema

If you suffer from eczema you might think that the itching, dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing and even bleeding it causes is unavoidable. Treatments for eczema normally focus on reducing and relieving these symptoms rather than trying to identify the causes.

The most common treatment, Corticosteroid cream, has many undesirable side effects. Prolonged use can cause a thinning of the skin (atrophy). It also has an immunosuppressive action that if used with antibiotics or antifungal drugs can lead to skin infection. You also need to be very careful when applying it around your eyes as it can cause glaucoma or cataracts.

Through discussion with our customers and in house allergy sufferers we have discovered three common causes that can trigger and aggravate eczema. By treating these causes instead of the symptoms you can help to relieve your eczema at its source.

Chlorine and Other Chemicals in Bathing Water

Going to a public swimming pool might seem ridiculous if you or your child suffer from eczema because of the chlorine in the water.

However, you may not realize that chlorine is also used to maintain hygienic conditions within the public water supply's network of pipes.

When showering or taking a bath the heat of the water causes pores to expand making it easier for chlorine to be absorbed through the skin. In addition the skin of eczema sufferers can often already have rashes which weaken the skin's natural defence against irritants.

Shower filters are a great way to remove chlorine from your bathing water, helping sensitive skin feel healthier, as well as protecting your scalp and hair. If you prefer baths, the Crystal Ball Bath Dechlorinator reduces chlorine and chloramines by 90%. When water comes into contact with the media inside the ball, chlorine is changed at molecular level into zinc chloride which is a harmless compound.

Dust Mites in Bedding and Soft Furnishings

House dust mites are tiny, microscopic bugs that are present in virtually all homes. They are most commonly found in mattresses and bedding, where they live off our dead skin cells. They are also present in carpets, curtains and soft furnishings.

Dust mites produce thousands of droppings daily. Many people with eczema are allergic to these droppings. The dust mite faeces are able to invade eczema sufferer's bodies as their natural skin barrier is broken.

The effects of dust mites can be eliminated using dust mite proof barrier cases. These provide an impenetrable barrier between you and the dust mite, stopping their droppings reaching you and your skin cells reaching them. Without your shed skin cells the dust mites will die.

Harsh Chemicals in Toiletries

A large amount of the toiletries available contain harsh toxic chemicals. Instead of soothing and nourishing your skin and hair, as they advertise, they can often irritate your skin and cause serious damage to your health. They can be particularly irritating for eczema sufferers as their skin barrier is broken, allowing the harsh chemicals to invade their body.

Parabens, used as a preserving agent in moisturizers and body creams, can cause skin inflammation.

Sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate, used as foaming agents in shampoos and body washes, can be extremely irritating for your skin.

Formaldehyde, used as a disinfectant in many shampoos and hand washes, is very damaging for your skin, and has been linked to asthma and headaches.

Because of the potentially severe health problems associated with these chemicals we only offer natural toiletries. We have also found many highly effective natural creams, lotions and gels designed for eczema that have no risk of side effects.
