Re: hernia repair question.

I have a question for anyone who has had a hernia repair.

My neighbor had one a few days ago, (she did not have WLS, but did have a

large hernia with her last pregnancy-the baby is 6 months old)

She had her repair done " outpatient " -said she was kicked out about 1 hour

after coming out of the recovery room as they needed the bed.

Her incision is horizontal, and they did not tell her anything about a

binder, nutrition, nothing. She says she has 3 binders at home, but has

not had one on-I think she is about 4 or 5 days post op. Dont' you

usually wear a binder after hernia surgery?

Hi ,

Whomever did your friend's surgery is EXTREMELY negligent in not

giving her post-op instructions! She should most definitely wear the

binder! I'm not post-op for my hernia repair yet but my surgeon has

already told me I'll be wearing one for several weeks. Maybe as long

as 6 weeks. Please tell your friend to start wearing her binder

right away.

Be careful in calling a doc negligent. This can be used in a legal

sense as an attack on thier professional judgement and I read on another web

site where Someone was sued over telling another person the proceedure that

this doc was doing was dangerous....LOL. Anyway, as a nurse, In this area,

most docs don't use binders and if there is mesh, a limited lifting

restriction for a short period of time is usually the only restriction(I

spoke to a doc about fixing my hernia 2 years pre DS. I have only seen

binders here on Gastrostomy pts....and we're talking 17 yrs of nursing. I

agree that the binder helps with comfort, but Not sure how I feel as far as

hernia vs no hernia with the binder. I'd love to see a study. I had no binder

after my open RNY and had a umbilical hernia, but then again, I went back to

work at 5 weeks on an ortho floor, and know the second I did it.....I was

helping pull a pt up in bed and felt the " Burn " .

Oh, I agreed with that part, just wanted to let you know things are different

with different docs. Of course I would never have left the hospital without

knowing exactly how to prevent it from giving me trouble.....But I am a big

advocate of pt information, I think a lot of docs(None of our beloved ones)

just assume you know it all and when you come back with trouble, then act

like it's your fault....been there and done that....LOL. Will never let

another doc do it again....

While I appreciate the warning, and the info regarding the binder

(didn't realize it was different in different areas), I stand by what

I said about not giving the patient post-op instructions. Though

wearing the binder may not be specifically what the patient should be

doing, there should be specific instructions for after surgery,

right? It sounded as if nothing was told to the patient. I was

concerned that she was released without any clue as to what she

should be doing to avoid another hernia.

Thanks again! You always have great info to share and I really do

appreciate you clearing up the confusion on the binder.

Hi Tracey,

I have had 4 hernia repairs, three in the same spot. I was told

no heavy lifting and I was told why I kept getting these hernias. If

you would like to know why email me. My down time after a repair was

about 6 to 8 weeks. I wish I had a binder after all of those repairs

but they didn't even mention it. Just take it easy and no heavy

lifting. I am coming up on 6 1/2 weeks and I have a hernia in the

groin area. I haven't lifted anything that weighs much. I think I

got it when I trimmed the hedges.

Three of the hernias were with an incision in the same place as the

DS surgery the groin hernia was repaired laproscopic. If I get

another ventral hernia (stomach area) I will probably use my binder

some of the time. It hurt getting up from bed and sitting down.

Does your friend have children? infants? Some things we do

without thinking like..... My 8yr old was hurt badly and I carried her

home (we were a block from our home) She weighed 75lbs. I got my

third hernia from doing this. Don't lift heavy things. Have someone

help her.

Hope this helps a little. Make sure she airs her incision so that

she doesn't get infection.
