I would work on your doctor to leave it up to you if you want to come off. I could understand some reasoning about the two week break based on some children who may have a methylation " backup " (I just made that term up) but IMO you would see it as a behavioral problem that won't get any better and then lessen the Valtrex after the 40 days if it didn't improve (I'm just giving one example). Maybe your doctor has a strategy and a reason, but I like to stick to what works and not taking a break works more times than any so far. In summary, I would talk to your doctor and ask him/her to explain their thinking. If possible, have them let you decide about the break and play it by ear as you go. I think observations and checking enzyme levels should be the guide... not a guess or a philosophy. That's my opinion. Who is the doc? It's not that he doesn't believe antivirals to be essential for treatment - he believes valtrex is too hard on the liver and it doesn't attack the "full range" of viruses anyway. We conversed about Valtrex via email so he didn't explain his reasoning for the two week break. I think what I need to do is just get the girls on Valtrex and as we go along before the four weeks is up I will tell Dr. Sears my observations and go from there. I don't want to brow beat him in the beginning. Like I said he is very open and is good at listening and trusts parental instincts. Thanks for your advice and about watching behavioral changes. If there is a therapy that has documented recoveries in both the peer reviewed published literature and in a growing number of parent reports AND we have need seen a single published report of a family stopping because of liver enzyme elevation... my opinion would be a bit different than your doctor's. Plus, there isn't one therapy that works on all viruses so I don't know what your doctor means. There is a small list of doctors in our Valtrex Database who do not prescribe Valtrex. You may want to put his name there so we have a record of people who are unfriendly to Valtrex. I like keeping a record of that. You may want to fax your doctor the published refferences about autism and herpes virus and treatment with Valtrex. The file is located in the " files " directory. You can also have your doctor contact any autism friendly pharmacy like Coastal Compounding to see how many Valtrex RXs they have given to children with autism and what the feedback has been. After trying your best, if your doctor doesn't have a good reason to say no to your child you may want to consider addressing the request with another doctor. Ah, if he prescribed it by an email request it sounds like you might have some room to discuss the breaks he's suggesting over the phone or in person.
