Guest guest
I was wondering if you started from step 1, with the soup and all. That is the major turn off for us, because my son does not eat with utensils and I know that he would not touch soup. He has an problem with liquid and soft foods. I took him off of Rice milk after being on it for over 1.5 years and he seemed to start being more aware of his surroundings......I know that he needs diet intervention but the whole eating with hands is killing every effort we make at it. He has loose stools 2-3 times a day and they have undigested food and are grainy in consistancy. The only thing he has going for him is that he is NOT a small guy. He is a big eater of the things he likes and he packs on the lbs. easy! If anyone can help with any information that would be great. Guest guest
Hi and good luck.. Slater too had major sensory issues and he didn't eat with utensils yet either so we just fed him the soup. We did do the intro diet twice.. one at beginning and then again later on. We stayed primarily on the stage 1 and then some stage 2 foods since I didn't feel enough gut healing had occurred to add other foods yet. When we added in more foods later on to try to add weight, we did venture into other groups though. BTW, the undigested food and loose stools were a signal to me that he was not absorbing the nutrients/foods I was putting into him. Doesn't matter how healthy it is if they do not absorb it and that is what I finally realized and we began to adapt the diet and meds to fix this. Good luck and have a blessed week! > I was wondering if you started from step 1, with the soup and all. > That is the major turn off for us, because my son does not eat with > utensils and I know that he would not touch soup. Guest guest
My son cannot use a spoon and is learning to use a fork but is not consistent with using it. I did the intro for 2 days with him which I think was really worth it. I made the soup but cut the carrots in cubes so I was able to give my son chicken and carrots out of the soup as finger foods. I saw at the time that pecanbread website suggested putting banana slices in the jello so I asked Elaine if spotted bananas are OK for the intro. She responded that it is OK so I gave that to my son during that time too. In addition to the jumpstart in healing, I found two benefits from doing the intro at the beginning. First, my son did not eat much during these two days since the intro food is not necessarily his favorite food. After two days of an extremely limited diet, he was more willing to eat the foods I allowed him afterwards. Second, his taste buds had changed by not having the complex carbs. I know this because it happened to me also. My family of 6 went on the diet. Before the diet I gave each member an almond cookie from Digestive Wellness. My daughter spit it out while the rest of us kinda choked it down. In my opinion it was like cardboard. After the intro I offered everyone cookies from the same package. We all loved them. Even my daughter asked for more. My autistic son would not eat veggies before diet. Now he will eat cooked carrots over any dessert I offer him! My son has completely liquid stools before GFCFSF. That diet gave it more consistency but was still diarrhea. Zinc made them a bit more firm as did enzymes. Within a week of SCD, diarrhea became a thing of the past. He has nicely formed little turds. He has been on the diet for over 4 months and the only diarrhea he has had is when he had the flu. Size is another issue you brought up. Most people that talk about SCD talk about how it helped their child gain weight. This is coming from those that were concerned about their underweight child. In my family we have experienced both. Three of us are overweight and three are underweight. Those that are overweight have lost alot of weight early on (I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks) which slowed down to a consistent weight loss. Those that are underweight initially lost a little but are gaining again. It seems to me that this diet tends to normalize whatever weight someone is at. > I was wondering if you started from step 1, with the soup and all. > That is the major turn off for us, because my son does not eat with > utensils and I know that he would not touch soup. Guest guest
No, he will run and hide in the laundry room if he sees you coming at him with anything on a spoon or fork. He will chew on a spoon if it is left on the table with nothing on it. I think I will try the approach you mentioned. He is on Houston's enzymes (AFP and No Fenol) for the last year to year and ahalf. He only has undigested food from time to time not every stool, but the stools are loose to semi-formed (only one formed stool in the last week and that was after I forced him to swollow a probiotic pearl). I hate making him cry and almost vomiting in order to get it down him...... I also have Klaire Therabiotics in my fridge but I can't get them down him as well. I have just upped him primal defense to 2 scoops and it seems to lessen his stools....but no form. Just keep try to get things into him as he is really oral defensive. Thanks for all the suggestions and I will try it all. Dena Mother of Hayden (3.9 years old, 45 lbs.)
Guest guest
Hi , I've been following your posts with great interest, especially as our sons are close in age. We've been GFCFSF for 10 months and on a modified SCD for about the last 2. Yeast and bacteria are our two biggest issues. Noah was a champion eater before we went SCD - he'd eat anything you put in front of him, but now he's self-limited to meat, eggs, peas, and pork skins. I know that you've been doing tons of research and that Slater also has a yeast issue and that you just took him off pears and put him back on some grains. Have you found that perhaps fruits feed yeast more so than carbs (like potatoes, rice, and corn)? That's our big debate. We've completely given up on all fruits except for pear juice for supplements, so giving up fruit won't be hard except for the juice. Do you sweeten Slater's cranberry juice with stevia? Also, does Slater do any ABA or have his results been purely from biodmedical intervention? We've reached a point, financially, where we have to choose between ABA and biomed. We're choosing biomed and are cutting the ABA from 30 hours a week to 8 and we're dropping the consultant. We're terrified of making a mistake, but he's made so much progress since we started the supplements and the diet. We've had only 2 mushy stools in 2 weeks! (Which means the rest have been firm. Whoohoo!) :-) Mom to Noah Partha, 29 months
Guest guest
Hi. Just curious, why are you leaving SCD? We are currently going from GFCFSF very low sugar to SCD (with CFSF). does better every day. Our biggest problem is going to be thee illegal supplements which I hope to get some help with next week at DAN!. Anyway, just curious. Boy, what I woudn't do to have a clear cut plan for my son! I'll do anything, its just the fear that I'm MISSING something that terrifies me. Guest guest
Hi .. Thanks for your note and I have followed your posts too. Maybe we can get these two little guys together one day at one of these gatherings. Honestly I attribute Slater's improvement to the biomedical. We are not doing ABA and never have. We will start Verbal Behavior next week through our University and I am anxious to see how that will complement what we are doing. If I were choosing there is no doubt that biomedical would be the route I would go. I do think the education piece is important but honestly after seeing Slater's progress.. and he is the first child in any of the early intervention programs here to do biomedical, I have had the head of the programs at the Univeristy tell me that they now feel the biomedical should come first.. and they are an educational program. I have so much faith in Dr. McCandless treatment protocol and feel it has really made a difference for Slater that nothing else could match. In my opinion you made the best choice. On the food.. please know this is just my opinion from working just with this child. For us, cutting out the fruit and using some grains is working quite well. We still have gut issues that we are working on that worsened before I made the diet changes but they are getting better.. no doubt about that. I don't know that one sugar is worse than any other for Slater.. but right now he is responding to no fruit and has done better with the starches. It does appear that he tolerates the starches much better than the fruits. Though it may make no sense, he is a different child. I understand that this may be contrary to SCD which I believe is very valuable for some children, but this is what is working for Slater. And yes, I do sweeten Slater Cranberry juice still.. and it is VERY diluted too. Good luck and please keep us posted.. I'd love to hear what is working for you! PS .. one thing I found out was when Slater self limited, it was usually something his body did not need any longer! This is certainly not the case with all children of course but for us it was true every single time.. he was addicted to eggs and tested as highly allergic to them.. perhaps from having so many but who knows.. also loved peas and when we cut them out, his yeast got better. I found that when I took those foods away that he was craving that he would balk, but then would begin to eat many more different things. He doesn't have any foods now that he will not eat.. just lots that I am still limiting. It really has been amazing since he would only touch about 3 things a few months ago! He eats a varied and balanced diet now and is just doing better overall. I'd love to know more of what you are doing now. > Hi , > > I've been following your posts with great interest, especially as our > sons are close in age.
