Guest guest
Well they say that lightning doesn't strike twice, but it sure hit my house last December when both of boys were diagnosed with autism a week a part (three weeks before Christmas). This Christmas the DAN! Santa (Stan) brought us Valtrex and some hope. A year ago I felt like my whole world had fallen apart, but WOW.. I think we are really on to something here! is on day 17 and he has more rashes. The most disturbing is that his diaper rash which was so severe a few days ago had seemed to go down a bit, but has reappeared and now he has red bumps on the surrounding and very sensitive region. The poor little guy even had a slight amount of bleeding under his penis from a sore. It is weird how this rash keeps fluctuating so quickly from almost gone to back again, but even worse. His fine rash had almost completely gone away and then came backover a good portion of his body after his second dose today . His left eye has been teary. Interestingly enough it was the same eye that he had received ointment (thimerasol perhaps?) for when he was an infant and his tear duct had not completely opened. He has a few red dots on his body as well. His feet are peeling and bleeding something awful. (His feet have always been very sensitive. Our habilitator had the awesome observation that he seems to be having the most extreme reactions in areas where sweat stays on his skin. Maybe this virus is coming out through sweat as well as poop and the skin. We need a sauna- the irony is that we live in Phoenix and any other time of the year all that you would have to do is walk outside to feel like you are in one.LOL! He had a fabulous OT/speech co-treat today and repeated many words and looked for his therapist's reaction and smiled and laughed. He even went up to a boy in the waiting room and said hi and laughed trying to get him to play. Everyone just stopped and couldn't believe it. We started his brother Logan on Valtrex as well. His viral titers came back very high so his DAN! thought he should try Valrex too. It is day 4 and we are now seeing a reaction to it for him as well. On days one and two he was snorting a lot- kind of clearing his throat, which he has never done before. He was extremely hungry and hyper yesterday.(fungal die off?) Today he showed a major speech regression and answered questions that I know he knows the answers to in a very odd manner. He has also been drooling. After his second dose today we noticed the fine rash for the first time on his shoulder, back and bottom. I am very nervous about his regression because he had been doing very well, but still had some slight autistic tendencies. Most people wouldn't know he has autism until they ask him Why-type questions. It is so hard to see him regress in language when it took so much effort to get him where he is today. I am going to stick with it. I'm sorry this post is so long. It has helped me to hear the symptoms of others so I know that I am not harming my child. There is hope for a recovery or improvement with this therapy. I am taking video of Logan and have begun at day 15 for , but it is really hard to get the rash to show on tape because it is so fine and these children never- ever stop moving!!!
