Silent on OCD

Well, I've always complained doesn't want to talk about OCD.

Or maybe just can't express himself.

He said recently he was feeling stressed. This was during Driver's

Ed bookwork classes, which he has finished. He really hasn't had any

homework from regular classes but had driver's ed each night. And

even I couldn't answer some of the questions. Anyway, don't know if

that played a part in anything or not.

But for the latest - He really hasn't played any video games in a

while. Figured he was bored with them. He did play the computer

games he got at Christmas. Wanted computer games instead of video

games.

He had a gift card for Blockbuster Video and had me take him to rent

a video game. A particular game, one of the Final Fantasy games for

the regular Playstation. We go one day. Not on the shelves. Guy at

desk says they have 1 located in the store. We don't find it and

leave. Go back again. No game. Go back a third time.

finds the game, it was misplaced in the movie area for Final

Fantasy. He finally has his game.

Now - says when we get home that he " might " play it. I ask

this because is playing it. is not in the room where

is playing. I say to that I hate for him to spend his

$$ and not play it. What does he mean by " might " play it??? He

shrugs. I finally ask him is this an " OCD thing " ?? If you can

picture this, he is shaking his head " no " as he says " maybe. " (SIGH!

that's my !) I ask can he tell me about it. No/shrug.

So each time is playing the game, I find in another

room. He will not be in there and he doesn't want to see

the " screen. " I told him tonight that HE knows what he needs to do -

exposure; said this as he was standing at the bedroom door where

he " couldn't see " and waiting for to save the game and quit. I

told him he should could come in and look at the screen/game for

just " 2 seconds " and then walk out. He just could not do it. I

could " see " the anxiety, sigh.

Generally, he's doing well. I see little signs at times but I expect

that. Like he might pause before doing something. But that's such a

small pause compared to where he was years ago! And with no repeats!

Anyway, another sign of the illogic of OCD or either the illogic of

(that Aspergers part?)....rent a video game you aren't even

going to at least " watch " someone play and know it beforehand!

Dear

Thanks for sharing so much with this group. I haven't contributed much

lately but, read all of the posts. I don't know how you keep up with it all! My

son

too has some funny video game issues. He would have to run out of the room

when saving his data on " Animal Crossing " . Amongst other things I can't think of

right now. This OCD is so weird.

With you via the internet,

Beverly,

Thanks, my first thought was " YAY, 's NOT the only one who

does these things! " re the video games. But I am sorry your son is

also going thru these feelings/compulsions! :)

A while back when quit playing the games himself, he would

bug his brothers or me to play a game so he could watch. He couldn't

play but wanted to watch. So now we've moved to " rent the game but

don't play and don't watch. "

You're right, OCD is so weird!

And keeping up with it all just seems to come in " spurts " , sort of

like my housework! ;)

My son 9,also has video game issues. He goes from one extreme

to the other.Just last summer he could not even play a game in the

arcade that was next to one of those shooting games with the guns. Now

he and his friends play those games in the house all the time.Every

now and again he will come and whisper to me " I think it's real but

it's not thats just my OCD " and then continue playing. This is also

true of movies and television. In his case his OCD usually kicks into

high gear in the spring(sigh). The last two years in the spring he

could not bear any kind of violence, even some cartoons got to him.By

the mid to end of summer things would start to simmer down and by the

winter you would never know any of these things ever bothered him.

This year is the first on the meds, so this will be a true test to

see how much they are really helping.I myself have some issues with

these video games .It is hard to know where to draw the line because

some can be so violent. This is a hard call even for those who have

kids without OCD.Anyway your son is older so I guess he can decide

for himself about that.Well I wish you and your son good

luck.~~
