Guest guest
Dear Tishanne, I am so glad your son is ok how scarry for you and your family. (Mushrroms wow no wounder I don't eat them) Can I ask what state you live in. Your V.P seems to be a real piece of work I am so sorry you are having such a hard time with school. Im scared knowing my son who just turned 6 will be dealing with these issues when he is older. I really enjoy your post I think that those of you with older kids help us understand our own children that are younger. He ate poison mushrooms from our yard. Later he was vomiting, diarreah with cramps and dizzy. We took a sample mushroom to the er, hospital. I can't believe he did this. He got so sick. His heart rate dropped really low. The Dr.s said eating poison mushrooms could have killed him. I asked him why he ate them. He says he watched a tv show where some guys were picking mushrooms to eat them so he decided to try it. He was just outside goofing around early afternoon. By evening he's down on the bathroom floor from vomiting so bad. He's very lucky to be resting and ok, recovering. Treatment for mushroom poisoning can include kidney dialysis and liver transplant. Symptoms come on approx 6-10 hours after digestion with vomiting the first day. Then the second day symptoms subsiding. Kidney dialysis to remove poison toxins if discovery of mushroom poisoning. The third day liver damage, some need a liver transplant. Sometimes death.Thank god he is ok,feeling yuky and resting. Guest guest
Hi Lesley,we live in Washington on the coast. Mushrooms are everywhere! I never imagined my son would eat some. Our town population is very small. Our entire junior high and high school are combined at one school of approx 300 hundred students total. There is one jh student with autism that I know of. My son is the only hs student with autism. There is other children, teens with autism in the area. Those kids homeschool. I just assumed school principles and vice principles had some knowledge of autism or the pdd spectrum. The vp didnt even know there was another child at school with autism besides my son. The principle and vice principle are new this year. They have the zero tolerance policy down tight. I understand the laws. I explain them to my kids. I feel more and more I will have to keep them under better watch and teach them freedom in society may carry a big price for their behaviors. They just don't get it,there are many social laws. Plus I have to pay the fine. I would rather avoid the situation then pay fines. Guest guest
Hello Birthday girl! He is home from the hospital today. He was treated and went through a pretty big ordeal. One more hour could have cost him his life because his heart rate dropped very low and poisoning. His liver tests show inflamation and he is very sick with alot of stomach pain, side ache. He looks very sick. They cleared his stomach in the hospital and gave him a charcoal solution and iv. He came home this a.m. I am to check on him every two hours for worsening symptoms for the next couple of days. He comprimised his liver function. That really worries me. He looks very pale, sick. The hospital confirmed the mushroom{sample} was a poison type. They grow everywhere here. Worry, worry. I am still in shock! Guest guest
Tishanne Get in touch with these folks. They are your Washington State Parent Training Center. All states have one. They will help you with the school and may be able to help you with other things like Medicaid certification, transition planning to adulthood, respite, advocacy and other wraparound services. Don't be put off by the locations, if one is not close to you. Our headquarters is here in Anchorage but we have Parent to Parent support through out the whole state and that includes the Bush (what we call the rural villages of Alaska). By the way, the place where you put the training necessary for school staff to educate them about your child's disability goes on Page 9 of the IEP. You can include the principal in that training and he will be required to complete it by law. Your PTI Center can provide that training in person or by webcasts or other technology. http://www.washingtonpave.org/ptp/about.asp > > > > From: tishannepatterson <tishannepatterson@> > > Subject: Eating dangerous mushrooms > > To: AutismBehaviorProblems > > Received: Tuesday, 28 October, 2008, 12:55 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi,my 16yr{hfa} son was outside in our yard, woods. Guest guest
Hi Christie, thank you so much for the excellent information. I have a stack of iep copies with no training listed on page 9. I am so happy to learn this! Even the Elementary school principle claims to " not know anything about the spectrum except its a brain chemistry problem. " Thats why we have so many communication barriers. When the schools feel behavior issues are simply bad kids, bad parents I wonder what they think a brain problem is. I had requested via civil rights mediation, proper handling of my child. The staff offered to take training for ocd behaviors if I dropped the formal complaint findings. They requested I attend also. The training did not get scheduled. Now they are asking the court for iep meeting and mandatory attendance. I am homeschooling my elementary kids this year. They are trying to stop me from homeschooling. I can't figure out why the school is so determined. We go to court soon. Civil rights warned me about retaliation from the school.
