Guest guest
Suzie (weight about 100#) stayed on Valtrex 1500mg/day for 18 months. You keep them on it as long as they are showing benefit and progressing - there is no limit. Some kids need it for several years or more, some need only 6 months. I recommend at least a 3 month trial to assess, and a titer not more often than every six months, as these values change very slowly. As to doing the mega-dosing A along with other anti-viral treatments, this is a new treatment and no studies have been done. I actually see no contraindication myself, as they work differently. Also, acyclovir is pretty mild, and I doubt that you are getting effective doses to do much with the virals. I only use acyclovir for very tiny kids, and primarily just to make sure they can handle this class of drugs without any problem. If HHV-6 is elevated in IgM titers, a six-year old can handle 1000mg of Valtrex a day. (Valtrex is 6X more bioavailable than acyclovir). Guest guest
Dr. McCandless, thank you very much for your reply. My son will be 5 this March 6. He weighs 48 lbs. He is currently taking 500 mg twice a day. He is still making progress, new things all the time. I am reluctant to stop the Valtrex at this time, I do not want him to regress. Guest guest
> We're going to start Valtrex with Jack (4.5yo w/HHV6 in his gut) but the prescription came as caplets which my son can't swallow. I can't get ahold of my doctor tonight but I'm wondering if these come as capsules?? With issues like this, my daughter puts the caplets into an empty capsule, even if it means breaking and putting into 2 capsules. (and lauricidin pellets etc., anything that he can't get down well as he has no problem with capsules)
Guest guest
Hi, I crush my son's valtrex and mix it in a very small amount of juice. He always says " Bad! " after he takes it, but he does take it. valtrex We're going to start Valtrex with Jack (4.5yo w/HHV6 in his gut) but the prescription came as caplets which my son can't swallow. I can't get ahold of my doctor tonight but I'm wondering if these come as capsules?? The pharmacist said no, but I don't think he can be correct. Also, are any more people using valtrex to good success? I'm very anxious to try it..I understand it does no harm? Thanks to everyone, AmyGet more from the Web.
