My daughter has Tourettes ... she is 14 now and was dx at the age of 6. To be

dx'd w/ TS you have to have both motor and vocal tics. I would suggest that you

watch her closely and take a bit of a wait and see attitude for now. I would

suggest that you fond someone who is experienced in both TS and OCD when

interviewing someone to work w/ your daughter.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask :)

I have not posted in a while. About a year and a half ago we noticed

our 5 year old girl had ocd - bad thought ocd. We explained to her

what it was and had a therapist meet with her a few sessions; there

was no cbt or anything. It seemed to be a mild case -- or mild

compared to some other stories i've read. She eventually got control

of her thoughts when she realized what it was. At one point she

thought she didn't love her parents and was an awful kid. She

couldn't say she loved us. Now she does. She's very affectionate

and the bad thoughts don't seem to torment her now.

Now she still obsesses about monsters and has trouble sleeping

alone. She cannot go to the bathroom without having to ask what I or

her mother is doing at the time - making sure we're near. I've also

started noticing other things. I'm not sure if they are tics or just

ocd or both. She gets in the habit of having to shake her hands and

legs. At one point she said it was shaking germs off (she does wash

her hands a little, but nothing to the extreme yet). She

also " jumps " or does what I call a little jig or dance. She now

says that it just feels weird and she has to do these things.

Sometimes if she's in a strange place or thinks something feels

strange, she does these movements. She says nothing is telling her

to do it, nothing is going to happen if she doesn't. Sometimes she

says she can prevent herself from doing these things. But she says

she feels weird when she doesn't do these things. She feels weird

for doing them, amd she feels weird when she doesn't.

She went through kindergarten last year without any ocd related

problems. She's fixing to start 1st grade at a new school and is

nervous. I brought out " Up and Down the Worry Hill " and read it to

her this past week. She wants to be " normal. " I try and tell her

she's as normal as anyone else. I hope all goes well at school. I

hope all goes well everywhere for her. My wife and I are expecting a

baby in February. We both have mild ocd as well but have it under

control. We're worried about this new child getting ocd. Worry,

worry, worry.... It never stops.

Any advice out there? Any experience with tics or tourettes? I

don't think she has tourettes. Maybe it's just beginning. Any

recommendations for a therapist in the Atlanta, Georgia area? My

daughter works well with females,, but she's very shy around male

doctors and male adults. Any thoughts are appreciated.
