Gum Popping at the Gym

Recently I have had the horrible experience of going to the gym and getting on the elliptical trainer to get in my 45 minutes of cardio when soon I realize there is a gum popper stationed right behind me on the treadmill!! I am even wearing ear buds listening to Ipod or watching TV. I can still hear it, CRACK, POP like they are making love to this frikken gum. There is one lady who ALWAYS manages to be there when I go. I have a time period from 4 -6pm when I can and/or want to go and she invariably comes right in the middle of my workout. It bothers me so much I have to stop my workout and leave which is also very anxiety inducing because I don't like to quit when I'm getting a good sweat on. She doesn't look like a nice person, though who does huffing it out on a treadmill, and I am too chicken to ask her to stop.

I have recently been able to catch her on the treadmill and will go stretch or do some other exercises and wait it out until she finishes. This has been working out ok though I hate having to gear my schedule around a gum popper. I don't understand how anyone else can stand being around her but they are. It highlights what a real problem it is for me. Just recently I was happy to be on the elliptical pounding out a good rhythm having dodged the woman gum popping monster when through the din of the evening news on my ear buds I hear crack and pop and WHAT??!!! I turn around and it is a guy, on the treadmill, slowly walking and popping and cracking the idiotic wad of gum in his mouth. I really felt like my world was conspiring to make me crazy. In both of these instances it is not a little gum popping it is a full on cacophonous symphony of snap, crackle and pop. I'm at my wits end and wondering what to do. If I complained to the

management they would surely think I am crazy.

Exercise which is supposed to reduce my stress level is now contributing to massive doses of cortisol flowing through my veins when I go workout. I am at my wits end and feeling depressed and feeling a lot of rage about it as well.

We understand. I have not seen anyone popping gum at my gym yet, however I am

bracing myself. There is someone in my office though, not working with me

directly, who I everytime I see I avoid her like the plague. She has noticed.

We recently participated in a video presentation on how to be higienic as far as

washing hands and I was about to say to the presenter " I have a suggestion, why

don't we do that for other bad habits as well " ?

I hate gum, always have. I went to the dentist today and the dentist suggested

gum, for my mouth sentitivity issues. I think he got the picture, when I

repeatedly said NO, this does not work for me.

It is torture for me at the supermarket, in a line or everywhere. I understand

how you feel. How can this people work in a professional environment or behave

professionally, which we should regardless of any job we have?

What makes them think that others in the same room want to hear the slushiness,

popping and cracking? Please!

Hang in there.

Thanks a lot Curt and Waleska,

Glad to know I am not the crazy person I feel like sometimes. Looking back on my life I realize how many problems this condition has caused me with anger and uncontrolled emotions. The beauty of this group is it has removed the fear of the unknown. Still have the bad feelings when sounds happen but can attribute them to a recognized condition as well as a forum for those who know and understand. Excellent!

I feel for you. I was pondering joining a gym, and then I realized I

would be paying good money for something I might have to abandon for the

very reason you describe. It is bad enough at the grocery store, work

and church. I am saving my pennies for a home gym of some type. Hope

it will ease up for you there.

I so understand how you feel. I was in that same situation years ago and it totally stressed me out and prevented from wanting to go. I would give mean looks but don't think it did any good. I don't understand how this horrid noise doesn't bother more people. IT is like that are having to chew it to stay alive or something.I feel for you. I don't know what kind of headphones you have, but I used to be able to hear

everything through my old pair. But now I have JVC " Marshmallow " earphones and

they block out almost all outside sound... I'm totally dead to the world with

them in. They're shaped like earplugs and work with almost the same efficiency

as them too.

Here's a pic:

They also come in not pink ;)

Thanks! I will definitely check these out. I wear the Ipod ear-buds currently and they have zero noise cancelling capabilities. -r
