Im looking to purchase an infant scale asap! What would you all

suggest? I believe this was talked about a bit ago, but I cant find

the info. I dont have a ton of money, but want a great scale. I keep

hearing and have used the medela one. But that seems a bit expensive!

Can you please help me out here asap? You can post here, or email me

Dear April-

I don't know of a cheap scale that is still excellent, and by excellent I'm assuming you mean very accurate. I am in the midst of opening a private practice, and I am renting a Baby Weigh scale for the time being. It is my only option (that I know of) right now. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone knows of a different option.

Dear April,

I, too, was appalled at the price that Medela charges for their Baby Weigh scales. Marasco told me that the scales are actually made by a Japanese company, Tanita, and that that scale, the Baby Weigh Scale, is called a BLB-12.

I googled that several years ago when I was opening my practice and found a website for a place in the US that sells them new and used. Later, I purchased a second one to have for renting to Moms who need to do pre- and post- weighs several times a day, such as newly d/ced premies.

I purchased a BLB-12 for $749.99

and the carrying case for 84.99

$834.99

In addition you need to order a calibration weight to maintain its calibration frequently. The only place I have found that has the one like Medela is Medela and I couldn't find one cheaper than theirs. I calibrate mine monthly b/c of the amount of jostling it gets going to clients' homes.

The case is not the same as the one from Medela with pockets, but I have found that the pockets aren't all that important.

I bought them from Randy Lanier at Total Body Works in TX. I have had good response from him. His numbers are

April;

Another option for the carrying case is a "suit case" with wheels. I found one very resonably priced to fit the scale and a few other things. I like the fact that I don't always have to carry it and I can wheel it around....

Another thought on the Medela/Tanita scale. If you are a Medela rental/retail site, you can buy the pump wholesale for $895.

Keep in mind what you'll use the scale for. Normal weight checks is one thing. But if you're planning to do pre- and post-feed weights, the only one (I believe) that has been shown in research to be reliable is the Medela Baby Weigh. No other scale measured up to the rigourous standards of the research.
