But which is the chicken and which is the egg? Do alcoholics drink (some of them, or some of the time) to self-medicate for anxiety? Or does drinking cause the anxiety? Or both? Could be any combination. In Al-Anon one of our readings says, " Alcoholics drink because they think they have to. " I think many alcoholics drink to " numb " anxiety and guilt. Guest guest
I don't know about other alcoholics, but with me, I started drinking more heavily after a traumatic abuse experience in my life. I did not seek any type of counsel for what happened to me at the time and only my Mom and sister new. But they really didn't know the depth of my experience. I tried to carry on like nothing had happened, but I would be forever changed. Years later I was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder among other emotional problems. So I would have to agree about alcohol numbing anxiety, pain, thoughts...WHATEVER. I have to credit God for my soberness. Once I got the unbelievable, outstanding, awesome, spiritual sign from above - there was no question what I was suppose to do. Get sober. And I did. Cold turkey. And haven't looked back since. (except to thank God that I never harmed, hurt, or killed anyone when driving, including my precious daughters in the car.) But, I do think guilt about drinking can cause anxiety in some people. Such as realizing your're drinking too much, and drink any way or of course disobeying the law about drinking and driving.
