Guest guest
There are two companies I talked to about liability/malpractice insurance. Cotterell, & Fife https://www.cmfgroup2000.com/applications/alliedhealth.htm and Seabury & part of the Marsh Insurance Group http://www.maginnis-ins.com/. Probably any company that offers coverage for Allied Health Professionals could issue a policy. I don't know if either I talked with writes policies in Canada, but both are very large corporations and it wouldn't surprise me if they or one of their affiliates did. Both have 1-800 #'s, but I can't find them now. I remember it being difficult to get them off the websites, but ultimately possible. Something I discovered while insurance shopping is that most will write you a policy for dual professions (I was looking for LC + birth doula + Childbirth Educator). They write your policy for whichever has the highest premium and then add on (usually at no charge) the other areas of practice. So I would guess your psychotherapist insurance provider could add the LC designation at no additional charge, they just have to have the information. Also, from a previous post to this list from Kathy Parkes, "With your liability insurance, make sure you're covered in someone else's home. If you do home visits, make sure your vehicle is covered as a business car. Your auto insurance agent can help you do that." Not that I know of. I'm a LSW and contacted my malpractice ins. carrier to see if they would also cover me as an LC. Flat out no. Policy only covers as LSW. I think most policies are this way, so you would need to have 2 separate policies. Guest guest
Is Maginnis(who may now be Marsh?) the only company that everyone is aware of that offers Liability insurance to IBCLCs? Guest guest
Hello everyone! Just wanted to give a brief intro of myself and ask everyone about Liability insurance. First off my name is Kerrie Conway and I have been an IBCLC since 2002. I am in private practice. I am also a La Leche League leader (since 2001) and a DONA certified Birth Doula. I am married and have a 6 1/2 year old daughter and a 9 month old Daughter. I have done probably a total of 12 consults(all home visits)since I passed my test but have not carried Liability Insurance yet. I have an oppourtunity to do some contract work with a nearby WIC clinic but will need to carry liability insurance. Is Maginnis(who may now be Marsh?) the only company that everyone is aware of that offers Liability insurance to IBCLCs? I wanted to be able to do some comparision shopping on rates if there was another company out there. Look forward to your responses on this and in participating in many more discussions! Thanks everyone! Kerrie Conway IBCLC, CD(DONA) Birth and Breastfeeding Services
