Matt was followed up till 15 months, at which time they decided he was reaching all his milestones at a normal time, thus they dropped him and told us to notify them if we noticed any problems. He did fine except for the fact that he wasn't talking. His brother was an early talker and tended to pronounce his words clearly. Matt, on the other hand, was not saying more than 3-4 words at age 3. At that time we got him into our special education program and we took the Hanen Class (which is a class to teach communicating with children who are unable to talk, ie. deaf, learning disabled, etc.) By the time he finished the first semester of school and we started the Hanen program, he was talking in 5-7 word sentences! I have nothing but praise for the local special education program. He went from 3-4 total words, to 5-7 word sentences in just 3 1/2 months. He is now in speech class. He has trouble with his L, R and th sounds. Otherwise he is doing GREAT! He is now in Kindergarten (1/2 day special ed. and 1/2 day extended care) He is going to have his 6th birthday in a couple of weeks. We are meeting with his teacher to see about getting him in the regular K class for part of the morning since he is doing so well with reading. He is expected to go to regular Kindergarten next year! My only wish at this point is that we had gotten him into speech therapy earlier. That has helped the most lately. Good luck. It sounds like you are on the right track. My son is now 7yrs old, and it seems like only yesterday he was turning two, and enjoying every moment! I think he was also about that age when we really started to see a change in his speech. He was really getting the concept of, " Hey, if I try and ask for it without pointing maybe I can get what I really want. I would ignore the pointing, and make him ask. He figured that game out quick. Now at seven, he talks non stop. H etalks about everything! Right now were on the subject of Six flags. He knows in May he will get to go there, and he reminds us everyday! I don't know about Danny, but Cody is a true Buffalo King. He can buffalo anyone at anytime. We even had that written in his IEP! He is to start a speech therapy programme soon - and so far we have been encouraged to use Makaton Sign Language with him. What is the Hannen programme you mentioned it sounds really interesting. Hi Tom: You can check it out on the web at www.hanen.org I think sign language is great. I wish we had taken it. By the time we admitted there was a problem, he was in school and most of the problem was solved. Once in school, they had him talking in a few months. I really liked the Hanen program, however, and wish we had taken it earlier. Good luck, sounds like things are going great at this time! He will also act like he doesn't understand something( and I know he does) just to get out of doing it! His teachers at school have fallen prey to his buffalo ways, but they get smarter and smarter everyday. Now, see what cha got to look forward to Tom! Guest guest Posted January 23, 2001 Report Share Posted January 23, 2001 Happy Birthday!! Yesterday (Jan 22) was also my MDS son's birthday! turned 8! Lost his first tooth for his birthday (kids having weird teeth problems.. jared and my older sons adult teeth came in BEHIND their primary teeth, so the baby teeth dont get pushed out.. they end up with 2 rows of teeth! ugh) About stringing words together, 's been a late bloomer mentally/academically... he didn't really start to speak (understandably) until he was 4-5, but stringing words together came not too long after that. Now, at 8, he can do 5-6 word sentences (although the speech therapist seems to think only 2-3 words... she just doesnt hear him arguing with his sister at home!)
