Guest guest
I need some feedback on a horrible incident that happened to my 5 year old son with autism at a Toys R Us last Sunday. He was in an aisle just behind me when I turned to see an older boy (8?) smash into him with a shopping cart at full speed. I yelled " watch out " but too late. He was lifted into the air and hit the ground. I ran over to check on him and firmly asked the boy " where are your parents? " . My son was shocked and his cheek was red from impact. My wife tried to calm him down as he was crying and wanting to leave. Meanwhile, the father comes over from across the store and out of sight. Instead of caring about my son, he got in my face and argued about me " yelling " at his son. A store employee was between us trying to maintain order. I mentioned my son has autism - no one seemed to care. The floor manager finally got my son an ice pack and asked if I wanted to fill out an incident report. My son calmed down and seemed to be okay but still emotionally upset and not understanding the situation. There's no way to know the extent of injury due to his poor communication. I'm sure he was traumatized as well. Yesterday though his teachers mentioned my son seemed out of it. I also noticed he seemed different. I'm concerned about possible head trauma (as that can set in later) and want to take him to a doctor (although they have no clue how to deal with autism!). What are my rights in regard to Toys R Us? A claims person called me and said they never got the contact information about the boy and his irresponsible parents. Looking back, I wish I called the police but unsure what they would have done. Everyone was quick to blow it off as kids being kids. There was no way the boy's parents would have stayed as calm as I did if it were the other way around. Please take this as a warning to watch your kids in stores, etc. I hate to think what could have happened especially if I didn't see the incident. Unfortunately, I can't get the horrible image out of my mind and I'm still upset over it. This morning, I e-mailed that claims person at Toys R Us and asked how they plan to cover any medical costs. That way, if the doctor wants to do a MRI, etc. they will cover it. Sorry for the long e-mail - just wanted to get feedback or if others had similiar experiences.
