Hi ,

one of the problems with this expression is that its correct version is

" bouncing cheques "

or else,

" writing/issuing bad checks "

Bouncing a bad cheque, if the expression existed at all, would be what the bank

does ... and unfortunately, both the scalped payee and the person with the

insufficient funds get to pay charges!

Another expression that means the same thing is " gving somebody a *rubber*

check " [rubber, as in a ball, bounces!]

I understood, in principle, what that means, but was surprised to find that

Google returns about 20 hits with this expression, and nearly all from the

same questionnaire. I was afraid that this has a certain AOD-specific

meaning

But I wonder whether what is meant isn't " check kiting. " Simply bouncing a

check, while regrettable, is often not intentional. There is a whole other

area of check fraud. See the link below:

Kiting is a different thing; that's writing checks on successive accounts, in a

circle if you like, to feed others, when there are really no funds; and

ultimately writing a check " outwards " without

completing the circle.

Of course, when you're a trader on the financial, FX, securities or derivative

markets, then you're only " selling short "

INTENTIONALLY writing an NSF check is an offence, and a federal offence in the

US if across state borders.
