Hi Nina...

It has been 2 years since my surgery and occasionally I am dealing

with more pain than usual. I talked with my neuro's nurse and she

said that they tend to have more complaints in the spring and

fall....weather changes?...not sure why. BUT, at the time I was

taking Vioxx 50 mg. on an as needed basis and I have been taking oxy

10mg. 2 times a day for about 1 year now. She had me change and

take the vioxx daily and take the oxy on an as needed basis.

This combination seemed to help quite a bit. But then again, I

never know for sure. Seems like about the time every thing seems to

be on an even keel, something seems to crop up to remind me that I'm

still dealing with this stuff. So you might check with your Doc.

about the anti inflammatory meds. She was very insistant that this

is the way to go and she said that there might be some scar tissue

and it just tends to get inflammed and cause problems. Dunno.....

My problem now is that my reg. doc. took me off the vioxx

temporarily as I keep having high readings for my potassium level

and they want to see if the inflammatory drugs are keeping it

elevated. See what I mean....just when I was feeling really pretty

good!

I pray to God that I never have to have the surgery again. I would

much rather take the meds to keep the pain under control. I'm not

sure surgery, at least in my case, would change the pain situation

anyways. I had pain before surgery and still have pain

after....although I do think it is less than before.

Hope this helps.....just my experience so far....I'm definately not

the most informed person here though so I'm sure others will have

suggestions. I know some of them gave me some really good

suggestions regarding the hip joint pain....

The regrowth of Scar Tissue, and the process of Retethering *starts* and I

say *starts* forming fairly soon

after Surgery. But Symptoms may or may not appear for quite some time, or

maybe not even at all. If I remember correctly, there are people on this

List who did start to develop Symptoms just Months after their

Detethering......I believe some may have even had another Detethering quite

soon after the first one.

That's one possiblity.

The other one is what your Neurosurgeon said.........it could be just the

Nerves settling down. Afterall that has to happen to all who have this

Surgery to one extent or another.

If this becomes such a problem for you, and your current Doctor has decided

not to look into it further since it hasn't been all that long since your

Detethering......I would consider a Second Opinion if I were you.

My untethering was only successful for approximately 4 months before i started

showing symptoms of retether. The surgeon who did the surgery pretty much said

it was " IMPOSSIBLE " to rethether that quickly. Now, just over 2 years after the

surgery I am just past the point i was when i had the first surgery.

I take oxy 20 twice a day with an extra 20 for breakthrough pain. I may ask

about vioxx. how does it do on irritable stomachs? That was my problem with

the other anti-inflammitories. Sometimes i try to get by on aleve since i can't

take the oxy when i'm at work.

My new neurosurg believes i began the retethering process 4 months after my

surgery. he recommended surgery last dec. but b/c of starting a new job, i

would lose it and my insurance to if i went on leave to have it. since i was

just dealing with pain issues and no lose of neuro function yet, he agreed i

could wait until i couldnt stand it anymore or until i can take leave from work.

i am planning to have the surgery over christmas break from school this year. I

will be eligible for leave from my new job in October 21, but that is smack in

the middle of my first semester of my MPH, so i figure i have stood the pain

this long, i can wait for another month and a half. So, Christmas 2002 it is.

Lousy way to spend Christmas and new years, huh?

In a nutshell, it IS possible to retether soon after surgery.

Just a comment about the Vioxx and stomach problems.....I haven't

had any problems what so ever with it. I was taking Fosomax for a

few months before they put me on the Vioxx (I realize Fosomax is for

bone thinning), but THAT really upset my stomach so I quit taking

it. Since that time, after starting the Vioxx...I haven't had any

problems what so ever.

I actually had my prescription refilled even though they want me to

quit taking it until they get this potassium situation solved, but

my back started killing me so BAD that I gave in and took one

yesterday and today.

Boy....it's heck gettin' old!! (50!!) hehehe!!!
