Guest guest
I can understand your frustration. My son has been on a lower dose than yours of valtrex now for 13 days now. I have not seen any thing really positive or different. He does seem to be having a little bit more fits and seems to notice more things around him. I dont know if that is from the valtrex or not. However, I am going to continue on with it through the 6 week, period. My doctor wants him on it until our next appointment in May. So I dont know what I am going to do!!!!! So , hang in there. R. -----Original Message-----From: mb12 valtrex [mailto:mb12 valtrex ]On Behalf Of SallySent: Monday, March 06, 2006 11:32 AMTo: mb12 valtrex Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] Valtrex Day 14 - Regression, No Rash, No Improvement...?'s Stan and all,Today is Day 14 on Valtrex for my 6 year old, 72 lb. son. He is taking 500mg in am, and same before bed. He has just learned to swallow small pills in applesauce so I'm cutting the pill into quarters and not washing off the blue coating.Although he has some verbal skills, he is low functioning cognitively and a very sensory kid (hand flapper, visual stimmer, loves to touch bare arms, etc.) He didn't display a sudden regression after any one vaccination. His Herpesvirus 6 IgG was 160 and I'm told that normal is 10. We've been doing the DAN thing for 1 year including GF/CF, MB 12 shots, and not seen any "big bang" improvement. The biggest thing is that he has been toilet trained since August...and if we get nothing else out of this journey, that will have been worth it.Since starting Valtrex he is REALLY hyper and we've seen big regression behaviorially...not answering questions or following directions very well, visual stims are really up, focus to task is even worse than before. Verbal scripting (which was VERY high when starting) is a bit reduced. Unfortunately, no rash or fever. He has said that he doesn't feel good in the evening and seems to be gassy. I've added activated charcoal once in a while. We took Diflucan for the first week and I've just requested a longer term dose to accompany the Valtrex for however long we stay on it. Maybe yeast is causing some of this?Life has really been tough the last couple of days. So my questions for Stan...1) Do you know of kids being responders without displaying a rash?1.5) Does this sound like it could be "healing regression"?2) Do you know of any older kids who have seen positive results?3) How does his HV 6 level compare to responders that you know?4) How long would you stay on Valtrex before deciding he isn't a responder? I'm trying not to get discouraged until we pass days 21-40 but I'm having a tough time. Thanks for your support.Sally
Guest guest
Sally, Why don't you try washing the blue dye off? If I were you, I would want to know if that was affecting my son. Some of our kids react terribly to dyes. It seems to me that you could wash the dye off and still give it in pill form. Guest guest
Sally, In an ideal world, too, Valtrex is dosed more than twice a day. We haven't started yet so I don't know exactly how we'll handle that, but you might consider trying to divide the total dose into at least three daily doses. I have read that five or six might be better, but don't have much information to back that up. Anne > > > > > > Stan and all, > > > > > > Today is Day 14 on Valtrex for my 6 year old, 72 lb. son. Guest guest
Crystal lite has nutrasweet in it and could also be a factor. Re: Valtrex Day 14 - Regression, No Rash, No Improvement...?'s Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try washing off the dye. I was doing that initially and giving dissolving in Crystal Lite. Guest guest
Yes, I know. Sam had cane sugar on his allergy panel so I've been choosing non-sugar otions when possible. Also because he is such a BIG boy and not very active. If I have a choice I go for splenda rather than nutri-sweet. And if I'm making something from scratch I use stevia or xylitol. It is so hard to know which is a bigger problem. Thanks for your thought. Sally > > > > > > Stan and all, > > > > > > Today is Day 14 on Valtrex for my 6 year old, 72 lb. son. Guest guest
Do not give up! My son Logan is a responder to Valtrex and MB12. He had a very subtle rash for a day. I had to search for the rash on him and I doubt anyone else would have noticed it. I probably wouldn't have noticed it myself. But... I had just seen a severe version of it on my younger son who is also a Valtrex responder. LOgan became very hyper for a while, but has calmed down. He also had high HHV6 readings. Logan had an itchy yeasty rash on his stomach and bottom. (Different from the Valtrex rash) Diflucan seemed to help a bit, but then he stopped eating so we had to take him off of it and load him with probiotics. He also had a small rash the size of a quarter on his leg. It had red bumps in it. When that went away the progress began. The bottom line is that you don't have to have a major rash to see improvement with Valtrex. It can be subtle, small and not even last long. Hang in there and good luck. : ) Jeanine > > Stan and all, > > Today is Day 14 on Valtrex for my 6 year old, 72 lb. son. He is > taking 500mg in am, and same before bed. Guest guest
Thanks for the words of encouragement. It's good to know that the rash can be minimal and short lived. I'm thrilled to report that washing off the coating has really improved things. I guess I now know that blue dye is a BIG issue for my little man. Guest guest
Hi Sally, If you are seeing a difference in removing the coating this quickly, you might also want to remove food dyes from his diet. They are evil in my opinion, but that's because my son turns into a maniac if he gets into something with dyes. I'm glad you are seeing a difference. - > >Date: Wed Mar 08 10:29:51 CST 2006 >To: mb12 valtrex >Subject: Re: Valtrex Day 14 - Regression, No Rash, No Improvement...?'s >Thanks for the words of encouragement. Guest guest
Hi Sally, I've noticed a lot of headers that are responding to your post, which is nice. Forgive me I am just repeating what you may have already heard. First, yes I would get back on Diflucan asap. Since you are noticing some positive gains mixed with a regression, I would keep going --but with Diflucan onboard. The afternoon discomfort could be yeast as well. I'm assuming the discomfort is from the gut if you are adding activated charcoal. I can't stress an antifungal when doing Valtrex enough. >1) Do you know of kids being responders without displaying a rash? 25%+ of the responders do not see a rash, according to polls. Typical non-responders don't see anything at all from Valtrex (if you can believe that) or they don't see ANY gains in the first 45 days. > 2) Do you know of any older kids who have seen positive results? Yes. I've read about teenagers who have had positive results from it. The medical literature has several recoveries based on herpes stain viruses in teenagers.... and I'm assuming they used Valtrex or acyclovir. My guess is Valtrex. > 3) How does his HV 6 level compare to responders that you know? I've seen recoveries with NO HHV levels at all. The values mean very little to me as far as who is a responder and who isn't. > 4) How long would you stay on Valtrex before deciding he isn't a > responder? I personally would stay on at least 45 days of both Valtrex and a good antifungal. Longer if you see any positive responses mixed in with your healing-regression. You've come this far, I wouldn't stop now. - Stan > > Stan and all, > > Today is Day 14 on Valtrex for my 6 year old, 72 lb. son. He is > taking 500mg in am, and same before bed. Guest guest
Folks, typicallly the healing-regression has a beginning and an end. As long as you have the yeast under control it commonly just stops as quickly as it starts. And yes, don't be suprised if you see gains mixed in with the healing-regression. It typically works that way. I can't tell you how often I hear, " I'm not sure if it's the Valtrex, but I'm seeing <insert positive response here>.... and then the regression calms down and the gains continue. Just take it one day at a time and keep us posted. We'll help you through it. - Stan > > I can understand your frustration. Guest guest
Hi Anne and Sally, I'm a fan of three times a day. I have heard of people doing more, but I'm not convinced that more is actually worth the effort, but I do seem to see better results from three times a day compared to two times a day. - Stan > > > > > > > > Stan and all, > > > > > > > > Today is Day 14 on Valtrex for my 6 year old, 72 lb. son.
