Guest guest
From Francine , editor, Rehab Continuum Report: I believe Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta is organized into a team-based concept. It may not be exactly what you're describing, but it's pretty close. Staff is grouped into physician-led teams based on the type of case (ex: ABI patients), and outcomes are reported by team. Ulicny, the CEO of Shepherd, is on our editorial advisory board. You may want to talk with -- he can be reached at (404)350-7311. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Thanks for your quick response and encouraging words! We share a common philosophy. I will most likely wind up being in your position, overseeing all of rehab. Do you mind if I ask...how long is your typical workday/ workweek? I'm just trying to find out if I will have a life outside of work when this change is implemented! hospital restructuring Hello, I am a physical therapy manager in a health network which includes a 200+ bed hospital, in a suburb of Chicago. Our department of 30+ professional staff provides care in a number of settings (acute care, occupational health sites, outpatient satellites, school and DD facility contracts, etc.) Hospital administration is considering restructuring from a discipline-based leadership structure to a product-line leadership structure. This would entail PT, OT and Speech clinicians potentially reporting to supervisors and a manager outside their discipline. Can you give me some information about resources, including contact persons at other facilities who have successfully implemented such a product-line management model? I would love to be able to learn from others' experiences. Thanks so much, in advance, for your assistance. Guest guest
Hi Maureen! At this moment you are reading the e-mail from (probably) the only director on this list serve who has responsibility for PT, OT, ST, and Cardio-pulmonary rehab that is not from any of these disciplines (Lab background). I was not given this position because of a strategic plan to have a " rehab productline " . However, when you have oversight for a number of disciplines the longview becomes one of a productline. The advantage for my staff is that I am an experienced department head and arrived on the scene with no preconceptions about rehab - also not much knowledge - but life is about learning isn't it? My respect for them grows as I observe their care with our patients. I work to facilitate their jobs by understanding their issues. My emphasis with the supervisors and staff is team management. Issues always are discussed and resolved with as much input as possible. This is all necessary so that we are able to have a unified strategy for Rehab. Our individual expertise is an asset not a cause for turf wars. When each person knows that they are valued, you can generate a great deal of energy and pride about the business end. Your reward will be exceptional service and the patients will keep coming! My " structure " is : Administrative Director Pathology/Rehabilitation Supervisor of Clerical and Support Services Physical Therapy Supervisor (Inpatient and Outpatient) Supervisor of Speech Therapy and Inpatient Occupational Therapy (recruited for OT sup. for two years without success - so I gave up) Supervisor of Cardio-pulmonary Rehab and Outpatient Occupational Therapy Hope this helps - it has worked for us with inpatient acute, rehab, and SNF levels and outpatient services which includes a nursing home. I'm also happy to report that no one has left that we were hoping would stay! Sorry to be so longwinded!
