Hi,

I'm not Stan, but just today, I also called my pharmacist to inquire about Valtrex. They said that there was no generic version of Valtrex, only brand name, and the choice of dosages were 100mg or 500mg.

Hi Stan,My dr called in the rx for valtrex. I called the pharmacy to see if it was ready to pick up. The pharmicist said it was the generic version of valtrex. He said there was no difference. Is this true? Will this be as effective? What are your thoughts on this? I'm supposed to pick up the rx today.Thank you,

The pharmacy said it was acyclovir & it was liquid. I just got off

the phone with my dr & she said it must be a mistake because she

told them Valtrex tablets! Anyway, she said she would call them

back to straighten this out. I hope so because I am very anxious to

get my son started on this ASAP! Wish me luck,

I forgot to say that it was CVS pharmacy. I have a feeling they

will not give it because they said to me the dosage was wrong for a

child! I may need to use a different pharmacy.

from what I remember acyclovir is a very potent med.

it's a good thing you caught the error.

There is NO generic version of Valtrex. You need Valtrex (valacylovir).

Anything else is a

different medication, like acyclovir for example is as little as 1/16 as

bioavailable for our

children and very few children improve on it and I have never seen a recovery

from it.

I would tell the pharmacy and the doctor Valtrex ONLY.

oops, I have to take that back.

The two options are 500mg and 1000mg. I have not heard of a 100mg. Oh, I bet

you

meant 1000mg. Lastly, that's what's here in the US. In europe, for example,

it's a bit

different.

Actually, acyclovir is less " potent " and less effective than Valtrex but

acyclovir has some

significant side effects listed on the PDR, whereas Valtrex does not.

I know acyclovir is less potent than Valtrex but my son has improved

GREATLY using it (you mentioned you have never seen a kid improve

using it but mine did). His mood improved 100% after the first dose

if you can believe it! He's been on it for a few months now. But,

he has never had a cold sore and regressed after MMR and Varicella

vaccines. He also had shingles (he's 2 1/2 y.o.). I did not know

there were significant side effects using it so could you please

tell me what you have found in the PDR??

Hey, be careful about quoting me.

I said there has not been a documented case of a child recoverying from acylovir

and that

most children do not even improve on acyclovir, which is why I prefer Valtrex.

That said, I'm happy your child is doing better. Keep us posted.

The PDR is in the " files " section of the main group's page. I would read it,

but all in all I

still think that acyclovir is pretty safe so I wouldn't be too worried. Read up

so you can

keep and eye out and keep your doctor informed, but if something is working well

for your

child I would keep going with it and see what happens.
