Hi,

anyone have info/experience with using prozac for their child's ocd?

my daughter is 13, has tried zoloft, paxil and is currently weaning off of

luvox as we do not think it has helped (she has been on a high dose for @ 9

months) during this time she has also had a lot of behavioral/ aggressive

problems at home and i am concerned that luvox has made her " on edge " , as she

flies

off the handle very easily. as the dose has been cut down, so have these

episodes. however, we are not sure that no med. at all is appropriate, so the

next

to try, according to her doc, is prozac. any thoughts?

thanks!

Does anyone have any experience with ssri discontinuation syndrome?

(8) has been off his Celexa for about 3 weeks now and not doing very well. He

was virtually symptom free for 8 months before we decided to try and wean him.

He was only on 5mg and we weaned him over a period of about 6 weeks. These

last 2 weeks we've seen anxiety attacks about school, insomnia, ongoing

negativity, irritability and now he seems to be compulsively cleaning (boy does

my

house look nice!). The p-doc says this may be discontinuation syndrome (of

course when I asked him in his office about any withdrawl symptoms I might

expect,

he said there'd be none!) and to hold out for another week, but that it's

hard to say if it's withdrawl or a reemergence of symptoms. All I know is that

it's downright discouraging. So much for my fantasy of him being " cured " ! We

are sitting down tonight to come up with a ERP plan for the cleaning. Any

suggestions anyone? Thanks! -

Hi , I read a quick bit about discontinuation syndrome, I learned this

is usually from abruptly stopping a shorter-acting SSRI, the symptoms are

flu-like, and it can go on for up to 7 weeks--yikes!

Since you took 6 weeks to withdraw from Celexa and his symptoms seem

to be anxiety and OCD-like, I don't get why your doctor is thinking

discontinuation syndrome. I'm amazed had such a wonderful response

to 5mg of Celexa.

I'm too chicken to try this at home LOL, that's why my child has been

continuously medicated. Once we finally, finally, finally found an SSRI

that worked well for my daughter (actually a combo of two plus Risperdal)

and provided significant relief, we were all feeling so beat up by this

disorder that there was no way we wanted to stir up that beast again unless

we had to! We did pluck up courage last summer to wean her off a small

secondary dose of Paxil and off Risperdal, and this worked well, but she's

still taking Zoloft.

Perhaps an intense burst of CBT/ERP at this point could allow him still to

be med free comfortably.

I'm sorry about the fantasy of a cure...the stats for reemergence of OCD

following withdrawal of an SSRI are pretty dismal BUT some people don't

relapse and it would be great if were one of these.

How is taking all this? My child has gotten panicky when OCD has

staged a sudden comeback.

Take care,

Kathy R. in Indiana

,

I don't mean to sound discouraging, but there is no " cure " for OCD. It

can be reduced to a minor problem through exposure and response prevention

therapy, but medication only works as long as the patient takes it. If your son

has

not learned exposure and response prevention techniques, then taking him off

his Celexa will almost inevitably cause the OCD to reappear. There are a small

number of children who do seem to " recover " and have no more OCD after a

period of treatment, but the number is tiny. Your son was on a tiny dose and you

reduced it very, very slowly so it is not likely to be discontinuation syndrome

that you are seeing.

I hope I am wrong and that your son will soon get better - but I'd talk

to his doctor about it anyway. It must be awfully discouraging for both of you

to see him suffer again.

Good luck,

,

I have talked about this before-this withdrawal from Celexa. I had a terrible

experience with withdrawal from Celexa-depression, agitation, anxiety, electric

shock feelings in my head. I've posted it before-about the withdrawal being

compared to heroin withdrawal by some. I wouldn't know about that, but I can

vouch for it being very uncomfortable.

You've probably read about it already, but here's an informative site about it.

I am on a different SSRI-Zoloft-have taken it periodically since my mother died

of necrotizing fasciitis in 1995, and when discontinuing it, I have never had

trouble, so don't let it cloud your opinion about SSRI's. From my experience,

Celexa really does this.
