Guest guest
Hi - I'm Dot and I joined this club a year or so ago and have been reading, learning more and hoping that everyone is going to be okay.

Back to the point though - URSO. I have been taking it for almost two years now and it has brought all of my Liver blood levels back to almost normal. It is actually, my specialist tells me, a bile acid. It has a revolting taste if you don't drink enough fluid with it and it explodes in your throat.

Apparently, over here in Australia, it is only relatively new and they do not really know how well it works, but for me it has made all the difference. When I first went to see the transplant specialist, I was teetering on the brink of having to have a transplant, but because of the Urso, I am still working and coping. Not quite as well at the moment, but coping just the same. My biggest problems seem to be the same as just about everyone else - fluid, varices, bursting veins everywhere on my body, especially legs, constant tiredness, vagueness, bad memory and now the shakes. I have an appointment in March with a neurologist for that one.

I think, had I not been able to take Urso, I would definitely have needed a transplant by now.
From what I've heard though, it doesn't work for everyone.

Take care all -

Dot
Guest guest
Dear Dot,

For your memory problems, I suggest you reduce your protein intake from all sorts to below 60 mg a day and ask your doctor for Lactulose.

Lactulose is a chemical sugar which is only slightly metabolized by the body. I take 15 ml twice a day. It was explained to me that the liquid goes through the alimentary canal and in the lower large intestines removes nitrogen from the breakdown of protein. The only slight side effects are loose stools for the first few days and intestinal gas (flatulence). This is a small thing to have for the reduction of encphelaophy you experience. Go girl!

Guest guest
Thanks , for your advice. However, I already take huge doses of lactulose and have also had two courses of some antibiotic which is supposed to kill any bugs in the bowel. Neither of these is doing what they are supposed to do - and you can only tolerate so much of that sickly sweet lactulose. yukky stuff - I'm sure it can't be good for the teeth!!! I will try and cut down on proteins though and see if that helps.
Can you advise me of some things that I shouldn't eat?
Today, I am climbing the walls I am so agitated. My belly and legs are so full of fluid, it is very uncomfortable. I'm sure you've all been through this though and I'm not telling you anything new. I just feel lucky that I am still around to complain, even though I would once never have considered my problems only thought that someone else, somewhere, was a lot worse off than me.

Thanks again,
Dot
Guest guest
Dot,

Sure a hard case, even your legs. Of course you have to start walking. Diuretics and herbal teas. Chamoille, Kava, and milk thistle.

Guest guest

Thanks again. I really do have to start doing some more exercise - I've been thinking of swimming, but council pools usually cause me to get ear infections so I've been avoiding that. The ocean is just a touch too far away - my driving is not as it was, I've started becoming too agitated. Perhaps some walking will have to do - I will just have to make myself more motivated and do it, not that I have too much spare time. I do try to walk longer distances, when I go somewhere, by parking further away than I need to.

I will have to try diuretic tea - not Chamoille though (tastes dreadful!!). How about green tea, isn't it supposed to have a diuretic effect too? Now that I think about it perhaps I may even try to drink Chamomile too - it may calm me down a bit.

It's good to talk to someone about these things. My other half thinks dwelling on it, by thinking about it, just makes it worse and I should always (I usually try to) think that my liver is not a problem and the transplant will never happen.
Sometimes, though, even tough people need help.

Thanks again

Dot
