Kathy: Thank you for your kind reply to my post and everyone else's. You

have so much to offer! seems most upset about his inability to sleep.

That's producing the most stress for him right now.I just brought up the idea

this morning to him that his cleaning seemed to be an ocd compulsion. He was

able to admit this and seems to be open to working on it. Hopefully we can nip

this in the bud before it gets too big. The p-doc suggested giving him

Benadryl at night to help him sleep. Has anyone else ever heard this? Does it

work? -

,

Yup-Benadryl is great. My 9 year-old son takes 1/2 of a 25 mg tablet (12 mg)

with his Zoloft at night, and it works wonderfully. I think the recommended

dose is 25 mg in his age group, but 12.5 works fine without him feeling too

groggy the next day.

Hi yes my daughter has taken Benedryl off and on since her onset. I

give it to her about an hour before she needs to be asleep, and it seems to

make her drowsy enough that the worries and thoughts and etc. don't have

much chance to get going before she nods off. Both her ped and her

psychiatrist--who first suggested we try this before moving on to other meds

to get sleep back under control--said it was a benign drug and could be

given indefinitely. My ped also said I could safely give more than the dose

on the package if needed, but all this time later I no longer remember how

much more.

One warning--some kids have a paradoxical reaction to Benedryl, becoming

hyper and wired rather than drowsy. If you've never given this med

before you may want to try it out tonight or some other evening when it

won't matter too much if he's up late... :-)

One warning--some kids have a paradoxical

reaction to Benedryl, becoming hyper and wired rather than drowsy.

If you've never given this med before you may want to try it

out tonight or some other evening when it won't matter too much if

he's up late...

I actually take about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of Benedryl at bedtime to

make sure I'm up on time in the a.m.! It doesn't keep me from going

to sleep - I'm not sure anything will - but I'll wake up every hour

and it's easier for me to get up in the a.m. (Been doing this lately

as since daylight savings time here, my body hasn't adjusted and I'm

sleeping later/not getting up with alarm) It gets my heart to racing

a bit too, but, as I've said before, Nyquil does me the same way. My

reaction might be from the fact that I'm a coffee-addict and the

caffeine doesn't mix well with Benedryl/Nyquil.

I gave my kids Benedryl for the purpose of making them sleepy, easier

to go to bed. I'll say it worked some but the effect seemed to wear

off when I gave it to them on a regular basis; or perhaps I needed to

increase the dose, I just didn't want to do that. Now that allergy

season is here, I might give it a try again and see how it goes at

bedtime for the kids.

Anyway - everyone reacts different to OTC meds too I guess!
