My district program is helping a lot. People move into our town just b/c the program is so great. I worked in the program for 10 years as a teacher's aide. Now i am on maternity leave. Have you considered making an appointment with a Psychologist that specializes in autism. My son was initially diagnosed by a child psychologist and we were able to get on the wait list for services before we had the meeting with the developmental pediatrician. I don't know who it works in NJ but here in WI there can be up to a 3 year wait for a spot on the waiver. Doesn't make sense to me since early intervention is so important and most kids are diagnosed at around 2 or 3. Just a thought. Guest guest
Hi Kellie Does your inurance cover the home therapy? I would love to get home therapy for but it's all out of pocket. I'm trying to find a psychologist but so far none will take b/c he is only 3 or they don't take insurance. Janice To: AutismBehaviorProblems Sent: Friday, November 14, 2008 2:28:29 PMSubject: Re: HI, I'm new here Hi Janice, At the first meeting with our psychologist we had to fill out about 3 pages of questions regarding developmental milestones, behavior and medical issues. Then the Dr. talked to us and observed with the toys in her office. The final part of the appointment was some testing. Very easy testing since wasn't even 2 yet but it involved verbal requests and social interactions and imitation mostly. Since pretty much failed all of the beginning tests we didn't have to go any farther. Then she recommended a behavioral program in the area and we started learning more about how to handle his behaviors and all about ABA therapy. He started intensive ABA at 29 months. The therapist came (and still come) to our home to work with him. That is how it is done here. There are no schools dedicated to autism and all the programs for therapy are provided at home ( or a daycare center). You get 3 years of intensive ABA therapy with a max of 30 hours per week and then you go Post-Intensive and you get funded $10,000 a year to use for therapy. We do a parent based program with a consultant so we can still have about 11 hours a week for therapy and pay to add more in the summer. Hope everything works out well and you can help your little guy during this difficult time. School is a really tough adjustment and was o.k. at 4 with a 1/2 day preschool program but really had a hard time with full day kindergarten. We reduced it to 1/2 day part way through the year and things got better. But again we had the home therapy still going and he was making most of his gains in therapy. If home therapy isn't an option then I would try and get some training from a behaviorist or a psychologist on how to handle the outburst as well as help you find ways to prevent them. It will get better. Guest guest
Hi Janice, We moved here to WI because the state provided ABA therapy and it is usually given in the home. It is really sad but WI moved to a waiver program a few years back and now they have a wait list of about 2 years to start (families like us who moved here for the program are probably part of the reason they had to move to a waiver program. I feel kind of bad about that but I would have moved much farther to get this for my child. All states should be required to provide this type of program). How are things going with at school? Is he adjusting any better? How is he with his new sister? I hope things are getting better and with the new little one you are able to get some sleep. Sleep deprivation was always a major problem for me when my kids were infants!! I so hated getting up 5 times a night when I had a toddler at home during the day. I miss the little baby smell and snuggle and I just melt when I hear that wonderful newborn cry but I do love to sleep all night again. Let us know how things are going. Guest guest
Hi Janice, You are very welcome. I was also thinking on something else as well. will show behaviors several weeks after something changes in his life. I started a new job on November 17th, working 9 am - 6 pm, then on December 5th, my hours changed again to 11:30 am - 8:00 pm., and his behavior at school started to change around the 1st of December, for the worse. My hours are probably going to change again after January 5th. Don't know what to yet though. I've emailed his teacher about the changes and she is trying to work around his behaviors, and even thanked me for letting her teach my wonderful child. 's service co-ordinator calls this the honeymoon period, the child acts good for a week or so until the change sinks in and then acts up. More of my mind wandering, sorry, but I hope that something that I write can help someone. > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > My name is Janice. I have a 3 year old son, . He has PDD. You don't want to go 100% and shock the kids system. She will be a very special girl and your son will grow to love her. I know because does love his little sister. It will be so good for your son to have a sibling to imitate and play with when she gets older. For now just remember how hard it is for typical children to get used to sharing Mommy and Daddy with a new baby who takes so much time. You will have to watch extra carefully but you will get through it. didn't have any idea what Paige was when she was little. I didn't know it but he must have thought she was like our cat or something. Then one day she learned to stand and the surprise on his face was priceless. You could see he had figured out she was a person and from then on she was part of the family and he now says Paige too when we are leaving someplace so we don't forget her(ha,ha).
