Hi Janice,

Welcome.

I too have a 3 yr old (PDD-NOS). I also have twin 5 yr old boys who are developmentally delayed and a NT 11 month daughter. Juggling everything and everyone may be overwhelming at first, but you will become very experienced very quickly and you will know and anticipate 's actions so as to not have a meltdown that will cause injury to others or himself. When I had my 3rd son, I would always have to keep an eye on my twin boys because they would always hit, push, bite their little brother.

I also remember when I brought home my new born daughter from the hospital and laid her in a bouncy seat when she was sleeping and strapped her in and my PDD-NOS sat on top of her as if she wasn't there. Now, my daughter who is 11 months now, is walking and talking, but my 3 yr old will always push her down, hit her with toys, try to suffocate her with a blanket, etc. When I am busy around the house, I will always put my daughter in a high chair, or a playpen and make sure that my 3 yr old is occupied with activities or put his favorite TV show on.

My advice is to never leave them together alone and the developmental pediatrician will work on your son to better handle his meltdowns. Have you addressed his diet and is he on any supplements?

Hi everyone,

My name is Janice. I have a 3 year old son, . He has PDD. He goes to a full day program in our district. he started Sept 29.

His behavior is getting worse and worse. He hits his classmates. He hits my husband, me and his grandparents.

He throws objects and toys.

He is going to see a dev. pedi. He is on a 6-9 month waiting list to see her! That is the normal here in NJ.

We already took him to a neurologist and the neu. said he was fine. I was very mad b/c anyone can see is not fine. So our next step is the dev. pedi.

I am pregnant and due anyday now. I am so worried about how will be with his new sister.

Hi Janice,

Welcome. Have you considered making an appointment with a Psychologist that specializes in autism. My son was initially diagnosed by a child psychologist and we were able to get on the wait list for services before we had the meeting with the developmental pediatrician. I don't know who it works in NJ but here in WI there can be up to a 3 year wait for a spot on the waiver. Doesn't make sense to me since early intervention is so important and most kids are diagnosed at around 2 or 3. Just a thought. Kellie

Janice,

I re-read my post and I also wanted to tell you good things that happen between my 3 yr old PDD-NOS son and my 11 month daughter. When I change her, my son will help throw the diaper in the trash. He also likes to feed her her bottle (with my assistance of course). He also likes to comb her hair and help out lotion on her body after a bath. He also likes to play with water when she takes a bath. Just wanted to let you know there are good things along with the bad and my earlier post seemed negative and I just wanted to let you know that there are postives as well.

I'm with . Take the baby with you at all times. Keep the baby in a sling or carrier, a bouncy seat in the bathroom - whatever it takes. My son took my daughter and stuffed her in drawers, boxes, under the bed...he did NOT want that stinky little person invading HIS personal space at all. My biggest problem was feeding time because I was breastfeeding and he wanted to climb up and start again. Those were HIS how dare I give them to this new creature?!?!? I still have to leave the bathroom door open and have to wake up long before the kids to get dressed for the day otherwise, I won't be able to. He's 9 1/2 now and it hasn't gotten worse but it hasn't gotten better necessarily, either. Hi Janice,

At the first meeting with our psychologist we had to fill out about 3 pages of questions regarding developmental milestones, behavior and medical issues. Then the Dr. talked to us and observed with the toys in her office. The final part of the appointment was some testing. Very easy testing since wasn't even 2 yet but it involved verbal requests and social interactions and imitation mostly. Since pretty much failed all of the beginning tests we didn't have to go any farther. Then she recommended a behavioral program in the area and we started learning more about how to handle his behaviors and all about ABA therapy. He started intensive ABA at 29 months. The therapist came (and still come) to our home to work with him. That is how it is done here. There are no schools dedicated to autism and all the programs for therapy are provided at home ( or a daycare center). You

get 3 years of intensive ABA therapy with a max of 30 hours per week and then you go Post-Intensive and you get funded $10,000 a year to use for therapy. We do a parent based program with a consultant so we can still have about 11 hours a week for therapy and pay to add more in the summer. Hope everything works out well and you can help your little guy during this difficult time. School is a really tough adjustment and was o.k. at 4 with a 1/2 day preschool program but really had a hard time with full day kindergarten. We reduced it to 1/2 day part way through the year and things got better. But again we had the home therapy still going and he was making most of his gains in therapy. If home therapy isn't an option then I would try and get some training from a behaviorist or a psychologist on how to handle the outburst as well as help you find ways to prevent them.

It will get better. Kellie

Hi Janice, I am sorry to hear this and find a good

Ped. Neurolog. So your has PDD. Still I would try diet.

Get the book Children w/Starving Brains

by Jaquelyn McCandless, MD

Start now removing all casein (milk) products.

Just reduce on carbs, bread, flour product for now.

You don't want to go 100% and shock the kids system.

Find a DAN Dr. (Defeat Autism Now) Dr.

I would check his yeast levels.

go to generationrescue.org

Hi Janice,

Welome to the group.

I'm , mom to , 10, PDD-NOS, ADHD.

I remember when was around 3 or 4 and his behavior changed

almost overnight for the worse. I had just read an article in a

womens magazine about PANDAS, which is a neuro reaction to the strep

virus. I took to the dr, they looked said he was fine, I

insisted on a culture. It came back positive, they treated him and he

went back to my sweet, quirky son.

Just another thought.

Hi Janice,

Welcome to the world Emma. She will be a very special girl and your son will grow to love her. I know because does love his little sister. It will be so good for your son to have a sibling to imitate and play with when she gets older. For now just remember how hard it is for typical children to get used to sharing Mommy and Daddy with a new baby who takes so much time. You will have to watch extra carefully but you will get through it. didn't have any idea what Paige was when she was little. I didn't know it but he must have thought she was like our cat or something. Then one day she learned to stand and the surprise on his face was priceless. You could see he had figured out she was a person and from then on she was part of the family and he now says Paige too when we are leaving someplace so we don't forget her(ha,ha). Kellie

Tishanne, Lois, Pat K., Kellie, ...Stacie, L., etc...I have a quick story. Baby and I were walking Lily into her class this morning...you all know she's been fragile this last year... tripped over one of the other 5 yr old boys foot, and afterward the two boys that were there began to laugh and make fun of how fell...one of the mother's was even in the room, and said not one thing....anyhow, Lily said, "don't laugh at my baby brother, that's not nice." They adore Lily but continued to laugh...she came to me and told me again...that they were laughing at her baby brother. I calmly told her what a great big sister she is, and let her know that she said her peace, she was right to do so, and that now it's time to move on and enjoy your friends and your day........she went right in, sat down and began to write in her "journal" ---

I'm so proud of her...not only am I proud that she is blossoming in kindergarten (after a heck of a start), but she is so protective of . God love her. She was not afraid that her friends wouldn't like her for speaking up, she was more afraid that would get hurt feelings. Precious girl. Had to share...

e,

How wonderful! Your daughter sounds like she is growing into such a kind and brave little girl. Having for a little brother might be more difficult sometimes but as we know they make us better people!! I have learned so much from and my view of the world has changed dramatically! So glad Lily is doing better in school. They grow so fast! Kellie

Amen to that Kellie...she has changed. What once was my HS child, is not my little brave girl (still highly sensitive but she's coming into her own)....she is so brave...and she adores her brother. Just his morning she asked me if would ever talk like her...etc...she also asked if he was getting therapy today. She really is blossoming, and I thank you for being proud of her.

Blessings to you...

I too have changed since we all have...he is such blessing ( a challenging one at times, but that's OK..)
