That sounds like the way I feel about being a CF carrier. I was horribly constipated as a child (I remember my grandmother sitting me on the potty and reading Reader's Digest until I finally went). When Sammy started having issues, my aunt's response was, "Sammy too? Well don't you remember nanny stewing prunes and making you eat them, juice and all? You were so colicky and fussy." The apples doesn't fall far from the tree, and they use the same chemicals on both!!!! Bonnie Juettner wrote: I think I posted a few weeks ago that we were trying a yeast-free diet with my 3-year-old to see if that helps her. It did, a bit, but then she got worse again (a healing reaction? maybe), but then her chiropractor also prescribed a homeopathic remedy that included nystatin. It's called Allertox Yst/CAN. (Short for yeast/candida, I presume.) She's been taking this four times a day. Well...for a few days, I put her on 1/4 teaspoon of milk of magnesia, which helped her with the impaction that I think she had developed. I also quadrupled the amount of papaya enzymes and probiotics we were giving her. (Also switched to a probiotic powder that has more types of bacteria than the chewable tablets we were using previously.) So...then we phased out the MOM and she's still pooping. About five times a day, normalish, small poops that also have tons of the black flakes/grains that seem to be associated with

oxalate dumping. I'm not sure the improvement will last. I've known her to get better for a week or two, before, and then suddenly go back to the old "once a week" or "once every ten days" routine, where she would have twice-monthly megapoops...But I hope that won't happen this time! I've noticed her cravings for sweets have drastically subsided since she's been on this anti-yeast program. That seems like a really good sign. My question for you all, though, is about the oxalates. I don't think too many oxalates were the original source of her constipation. I think that was yeast, and that the oxalate problem came about when she spent a year on Miralax. (At least I hope so--she's a vegetarian and a lot of the foods in her diet are high in oxalates--it would be really difficult to eliminate high-oxalate foods from her diet. Though I'm working on some alternatives, in case we have to resort to that. But I never saw black flakes in her stools until she

started Miralax.) I'm hoping, hoping, hoping, that all these oxalates were just stuck in her colon while she was constipated, and that she can, over time, poop them all out...and then be okay. Do any of you have any experience with this? How long should it take to clear oxalates from the intestines? I've noticed a progression...they started as big black flakes and now they're coming out as teeny tiny specks (sorry to be so graphic!). Finally--I know this is a long post. But I want to share a theory with you. It seems like a large percentage of kids with serious constipation are autistic. Personally, I'm on the spectrum myself--I have Asperger's--and I had terrible constipation as a child. (I'm okay now--so that should give us all hope!) But my daughter is not autistic--and yet she does have a (possibly) neurological issue--sensory integration disorder. I have this theory now that the autistic spectrum is, itself, just part of a larger spectrum. I think

that this larger spectrum would include kids who haven't become autistic, but yet have these digestive problems, oversensitivities, and in some cases behavior problems. At least, this is the only explanation I can come up with for the fact that the interventions that seem to help autistic kids also seem to help so many other kids who are not autistic but have some similar issues. I find myself feeling that I should be delving more into the literature on alternative treatments for autism--that literature might be a rich source of ideas for dealing with these other issues too. Like I don't have enough topics to research already--I never expected that medical research was going to be part of my job description when I became a mom! LOL. Anyway, thanks for your patience with my long post--Bonnie
