Guest guest
Goodness, sounds like your little brewing factories are working like they should. And yes, take a sample, they are not delicate little things. They can be handled with clean hands, moved around from jar to jar, and even (gulp) cut into pieces to make more jars of brew. They will right away start to cover the top of whatever jar they are in, and at the same time make you some neat juice. And as for the water, if it's safe for you to drink, then I'd say it's good for the Kombucha. Don't panic, enjoy this stuff. Guest guest
ok, so i have two jars with my split scobys on day 8 with: a new scoby looking like day 4 in the jar where the scoby sunk thin film looking like day 2 in the jar where the scoby is on the surface. have 5 thick baby scobys with a diamiter of a pencil or smaller totally formed in different places. this is the batch that was stirred for the first five days. i know the general rule is to do the straw test but i am scared that will set them back even further. both scobys are still very creamy and healthy looking from what i can see. i have another confession, used boiled and tested artesian well water with them instead of distilled. should i scrap the tea and start over with the scobys or look for a local scoby doner or sit it out and pray for the best? --------------------------------- All-new Yahoo! I'm not a fan of the use of distilled water, but opinions vary on this. But in no wise is distilled water a requirement for kombucha. The main concern about water is that it not have chlorine or chloramine in it. Chlorine will boil off, chloramine (used more and more by municipal water companies for purification) does not boil off so boiling gains nothing. In the case of chloramine, only a filter will remove it. The other concern would be water that is impure for drinking for other reasons. Our water comes from a spring on the property, and I have a water filter at my sink and I use that water. If you have had your well tested, then you don't need to boil your water before brewing. I boil 2-4 cups of water, brew my tea and dissolve my sugar in that, meanwhile I have put the rest of the measure of water for my vessel into the vessel cold, and when the tea is done steeping, strain it into the vessel. The waiting bulk of cold water instantly cools the sweetened tea, at which point I can slip my SCOBY back into the vessel and pour the starter liquid over it. --V ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Guest guest
I just had that happen with my last batch. I tasted it & it tasted really bad. So I started a new batch & the baby scoby that I got from the bad tasting jar is really doing a great job in the new batch. it is now a mommy of a very healthy looking baby. Let it keep going, since you do have 2 batches. Taste it & see what you think, if it tastes really bad dump the tea & use some of your other tea as a starter & use that baby scooby & you will end up with a normal baby again. I don't know why that happened, but this tea seems to be headed in the right direction. I'll have another scoby to give back to my sister in a few more days!! a really healthy looking one! Guest guest
With the stirring, it is going to take longer for them to develop. They straw will not hurt them. Just gently push them aside & try it that way. The stirring is probably what is giving you all of the little babies. Let is sit undisturbed for another 4 or 5 days, then try it. The scobys should be ok. You can put all of them in your next batch if they are still separated. I hope this helps you out. I've been reading allot from this club of ours.
