Can anyone in the group direct me to web site that has hard facts on

living near transmission lines? I have a client that has some

concerns and would like to arm myself with some facts on the subject.

Though EMF from power lines may be an issue, 95% of the magnetic field problems I have discovered in the last 15 years of testing are from in-house wiring. Almost all of these are associated with wiring errors (code violations) and are a potential safety and fire hazard. In terms of health, addressing this danger would be the priority.

I have not

looked into this issue for some months, but the best collection of current

knowledge on this subject that I have seen is the California EMF study http://www.dhs.ca.gov/ehib/emf/RiskEvaluation/riskeval.html

Upon re-reading this report I note two things (as before):

1 The extreme variability of the response of those exposed has not yet

been properly scoped, nor even discussed;

2 The issue of EMF from power lines may be a surrogate for exposure to

pesticides commonly used along power lines, but was not highlighted.

Two inputs from my own experience are:

a several of my clients had to have high local EMF fields remediated

(usually a ground loop problem) before they felt better;

b reduction of these fields did make them feel better, although that

could have been a placebo effect (I do not believe this, in these cases, but

it is a possibility and I have not done either a single or double-blind

experiment to find out).

In my opinion some people react to low-level electrical fields (at 60 Hz)

while others do not. These appear to be simultaneously true. Ongoing

research may help us understand the problem, but those who react only need

remediation of local high fields, not avoidance of all power lines within

the visual field. Over-reaction here is a sign of hysteria, and is not

conducive to achieving better health.

Jim,

Many years ago, when they reduced the speed limit to 55 mph. I

remember reading a study where people were exposed to the low

frequencies simulating 35,45, 55, 65 and 75 mph.

Interesting, the study authors reported that people felt sick more often

when exposed to the frequencies at 55 mph as compared to higher and

lower speeds.

Is it possible that 60 hz induces some low frequency harmonic in the

human anatomy similar to the above study?

Interestingly enough, there are human body parts with resonant frequencies

in that range. The use of noise at (very high intensity dB) low frequency

has been succesfully applied to stop someone from breathing (unpublished).

Despite this, I have only seen substantiated reports of molecular level

changes in biogical tissue with regard to EMF, not macro.
