Hi Jeanne~

I have been seeing the Benadryl topic pop up here. It's something I

will be sure to remember. Luckily at this point does sleep

great. Even though when he does have thoughts they are mostly at

bedtime. He uses his TV as a distraction. I don't know if that is

good or bad. I have mixed feelings on it but we turn the volumne way

down and set the sleep timer for 30 minutes. He is most always

asleep before the timer goes off. It gives him something to focus on

instead of laying in the dark and just " thinking " . We actually

started this way before we even had a clue he had OCD. It was the

only way we could keep him in his own bed, LOL. He always wanted to

sleep with us. Whatever works!

Just for future info how must Benadryl do you give? Are you going by

the package dosage guidelines or less then that?

Thanks for the info!

We started out with about 1/2 to 1/3 of the reccommended dose. (His

pediatrician said we could actually go a little higher than what the

package said if needed, but we're trying to do the smallest amount

possible). To be honest, I think it has a bit of a placebo effect with

him. He feels like it keeps the bad thoughts (and bad dreams) away,

and that, in and of itself, is a big help.

We also broke down and bought a game boy for him to use on long car

trips which was another time where he had a lot of free time on his

hands and would start getting stuck on OCD thoughts (and tic like

crazy). I swear that I am going to make a before and after video to

support the medical tax deduction I'm going to claim. Surely no one

could view it and say that the game boy isn't a necessary durable

medical equipment.

My son broke out in hives once and I gave him benedryl. He was having

illusions, crying and staring oddly. I think the medicine he was on for ADHD and

mood disorder/OCD and the benedry have a very negative effect on him. It was

really horrible!

I just want to mention this if there is a connection.
