Hi Gang,

The question was asked about what activities you can do post op. I had my

first fusion in 1998, I was able to tandem kayak with my husband. He does

the navigating I do the paddling! We started with very short trips then

worked our way up to approx. 15 mile day trips in the ocean. No white water

to push us along!

We golfed when we were first married in 1978, that quit when we had

children. I started to golf again in 2000. We had a course that was being

built and I'd start with 3 holes, then work my way to 6, then 9 holes. Last

summer I was able to walk 18 holes and shoot all 18. It was at the end of

the season that I starting losing bowel continence while golfing and TC

symptoms started to really kick in. Everything was downhill from there. I

had my TCS surgery 3 weeks ago, and as you know I've had a rough time

recovering, but I'm improving.

I don't recommend jumping into a sport that you have done for years

expecting to do as well as you did before your surgery.

As for swimming, I'm limited in my strokes, side stroke works the best for

me.

If I am walking outside on uneven ground, I use a cane or walking stick. My

balance is still an issue.

Each one of us has to try what you feel you want to try again. However, take

it slow.

If you feel you shouldn't do something, ask your surgeon. I asked Dr. B if

he thought I could golf after having the fusion and TCS surgery, and he said

he didn't see why not. It seems impossible right now, I could barely lift a

gallon of milk tonight, but I try a little more each day without hurting

myself.
