Though I've had several donors (mainly liver & lung) ask me if this is possible, I've never seen concrete proof of it. (Nor have those donors who were worried about it happening ever notified me that it DID happen to them post-donation) Sheila, is this health insurance or life insurance? Do you know which companies were involved? Have you seen anything in writing from the companies? I hope you don't think I'm doubting you, Sheila, but given how things like this can get exaggerated, I want to make sure we're not giving life to another urban legend or something like that. J. Guest guest
Sounds logical to me. We were told at the conference that they might be considered " uninsurable " all together after donating. That's sad but it must be true! Guest guest
Sheila, I have heard of this, and I've heard that they could be denied, or have existing life insurance plans canceled too. It's B.S. if you ask me, but you know how ins co can be... Has anyone encountered a donor having higher insurance premiums (when applying for insurance plans) post donation? Guest guest
I am in the process of documenting. This is for health insurance. >>> LAguiar@... 05/16/01 10:01AM >>> > Has anyone encountered a donor having higher insurance premiums (when applying for insurance plans) post donation? Guest guest
Mike, I'm looking for actual documented cases. Have you personally had any? >>> mchaney@... 05/16/01 10:03AM >>> Sheila, I have heard of this, and I've heard that they could be denied, or have existing life insurance plans canceled too. Guest guest
I have not heard of this happening and I agree with that I would like to see this in writing. Group plans cannot single out an individual and state that they are a higher risk. Individual plans or life insurance are different though. I have had 2 self funded plans agree to pay for services post donation for their member. -----Original Message-----From: Sheila Delson Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2001 8:55 AMTo: Txfinancialcoordinators Subject: Donor elig post t/pHas anyone encountered a donor having higher insurance premiums (when applying for insurance plans) post donation? Guest guest
Now that you mention this, I remember it also. However, there were no solutions/remedies/suggestions offered as I recall. >>> LDPharri@... 05/16/01 10:02AM >>> Sounds logical to me. Guest guest
I don't have anything documented from the insurance company. I had a case about five years ago when a pt father donated a kidney and he informed me verbally about 6 mos post tx that he was having issues with his health ins, and his life ins canceled him after he donated.
