Hi, welcome! I have a son who'll be 15 this month, he was diagnosed

around age 11.5.

What medication did your daughter begin taking? My son began taking

Celexa this past August and it's working well for him.

So did the doctor feel the hand waving (other motor actions??) was

due to OCD then??

So far as doing things on this site: Once you have clicked on a

message to read it, when you want to respond, then click on the

button " reply " . You can type your message at the top of the sheet

(above the old message) and then when you're through, click on the

button to " send. " To post a new message, pick the word " post " .

Does this help at all?? I was new to this way back then also,

probably still haven't learned each way things can be done!

Hi there, yes a lot of us have noticed similar behaviors in our kids. The

hand-waving could be a compulsion, a symptom of the OCD she was recently

diagnosed with. Most likely this is what the doctor thought. If so the

medication (I am assuming this is an SSRI such as Prozac or Zoloft?) will

likely reduce this symptom.

It could also be a tic. Many kids with OCD have tics and some may have

full-blown Tourette's syndrome, the ticcing disorder. In that case, the

SSRI she's starting today *may* worsen the hand-waving.

Also, lots of kids with OCD have sensory problems that aren't exactly part

of OCD but are common. Lights are too bright, clothing is uncomfortable,

noises too loud, things like that. This is sometimes called Sensory

Integration Disorder (SID) or more recently, Disorders of Sensory

Integration (DSI.) I don't think this is a " real " disorder according to

some doctors because it doesn't (yet) appear in the DSM, the book that

doctors use to evaluate symptoms and make a diagnosis. I have read that if

DSI is included in a future edition of the DSM, it may be included among the

anxiety disorders (OCD is also an anxiety disorder.)

My daughter's DSI symptoms reduced significantly when she was started on an

effective SSRI for her OCD. Also we used Exposure and Response Prevention

techniques to help her acclimate to the clothing and sensory situations that

bothered her so much. Others have had success using Occupational Therapy

techniques. Sometimes OT is available through schools, you may want to

check this out if her light problem interferes at school.

What specifically do you want to know about how to access the site? You

should have received a " welcome " email that explains how to post, read posts

and so on. If you still have questions you can email me directly and I will

help you out kathylr@...

Take care,

Hi :

Welcome to the group!

My son, , was also 10 when he was diagnosed with OCD, although he

also had suffered for some time before we realized it was a problem that

needed to be treated. Luckily the treatment is usually very effective

and it is possible to get OCD more into the background of our kids'

lives.

Extra sensitivity to light, sounds, smells, touch and other sensory

stimuli is not at all unusual in people with OCD, and, I have been told,

other brain disorders. What seems bearable to the rest of us really can

be overwhelming to someone with OCD and this heightened sensitivity.

OCD can create an infinite variety of obsessions and compulsions only

limited by human creativity.

BTW you are doing fine with sending messages, I hope you are getting

them easily too.

Will your daughter be getting cognitive behavior therapy in addition to

her medication? This will help address rituals which crop up when our

kids try to control their obsessions. You might want to check out the

files attached to this group for more specific information on many

areas. Good luck, take care, aloha, Kathy (h)

Hello I am so new here I don't really know how this works. I do

need a little help. My daughter 10 just diagnosed with OCD and

starting medication today. She constantly waves her hand in front

of her face when hit with any kind of light,Walmart is a nightmare.

This useto only happen in the sun. This has been going on since she

was two and has changed into different motor actions over the

years. We have used hats which have helped. and if she sis really

concentrating on something she can controle it for a little while.

Is there anyone who is going through something simular? Please help

and help me figure out how to do things on this site.
