I don't know how it works for everyone else, but I normally start the

conversation with the doc, explaining symptoms I'm seeing in my 11 y.o. The doc

then

asks further questions of her -- otherwise, she might forget. Also, keeping

a journal of behavior is very helpful. I have one I type into on my computer.

Lastly, seek friendly support. When went to the hospital, I emailed

about 50 friends, many from church. I got 's permission to do that so I

could ask for prayer for her. She was OK with it. I simply put a reminder that

this info should stay with the parents and not their kids, in order to

protect her privacy. I rec'd so many helpful supportive emails, including many

who

shared they were taking some of the same meds that was. And of course,

the prayer support was incredible. We had a couple of times of focused prayer

times, which were always followed by dramatic improvement in . We also

had people offer to watch my 8 y.o. daughter, bring meals, drive us to the

hospital, etc. Thru my sharing, at least one other friend was able to seek

advice about her OWN daughter (who ended up being treated for depression without

OCD).

Thanks for sharing -- extremely well-written and enlightening. It makes me

understand what my own daughter was going thru.

My 11 y.o. has been in the hospital 3 times -- all this past summer. Her's

was more due to the depression associated with her OCD -- she was obsessing

about a friend, and how that friend treated her that day would create a good or

bad day for her (mostly bad). In the month leading up to being hospitalized

she would have crying fits every day, and just wanted to die because she was so

miserable. One really bad day, she started heading out the door saying she

wanted to run away and die. At that time I called 911 (her doc had said if she

got really bad, that I should call 911). Anyway, she ended up being

hospitalized... and it was a great thing. She went in on a Thurs. By Monday,

after

being on Zoloft and Risperdal for 4 days, she was a changed kid. She said,

" Mom, I'm having normal thoughts, like 'I wonder what's for lunch today' instead

of worrying about whether likes me. " She also enjoyed the group

therapy, and feeling like she wasn't the only " wierd kid " out there. I only

write

this to let you know that hospitalization can be a very good thing, even though

it feels awful at the start. She hated the first 2 days, but after 6 days she

didn't want to leave because she had been helped so much, and had to leave

anyway. Good luck to you, and I hope the meds work. In the meantime, don't

worry about the hospital.
