Guest guest
Lori, When my son was 19 y/o had his SSI increased when I told the SSI office that my son started to contribute his portion of the household expenses.... Several individuals when they apply for SSI at 18 y/o, some will receive the minimum, not the max automatically. This was in our case which I was not aware until several of friends told me. The household expenses are:MortgageCPS (electricity)WaterGroceriesHow much of each do you spend a month.... example... say..... Mortgage: $1000.00CPS: $200.00Water: $50.00Groceries: $250.00Then you divide this total by total number living in the house... and that isyour son's portion of household expenses.... You cannot have the total go over what you are currently receiving in SSI already. When you fill out his SSI report at the end of the year... don't forget to document what his room and expenses. A form is usually sent the end of the year from the SSI office. Just make sure NOT to exceed over $2, 000. in the bank account. Good question in regards to tax purpose when charging rent, I have not had to though. Irma My adult child just recently was approved for SSI. They automatically take out 1/3 of the total amount since he lives with us. I know that you can get the 1/3 back by showing that he is paying his " fair share " . I also know that you can get the 1/3 back by renting a room. Does anyone have any experience with this as far as which is the better way to go? Also, if you rent the room, do you need to show the rent as income for income tax purposes. I'm also not real clear on how else you can spend the money for your adult child and what type of documentation you need to maintain. Social Security doesn't seem to want to give you any information when you call. If seems you need to understand the system before you can actually ask a question. Any information is helpful. Thanks. Guest guest
Thanks Irma - I found the form you send in after he has paid his share of the household expenses for three months. After than up the amount, what else can you use the money for? We have other household expenses that are not included in their list, can we use those? Do we need to keep receipts for every nickel and dime? Also, you said on the annual report to not forget to include his room and expenses. Could you explain that more. Thanks again - the information from SS is rather vague. Lori My adult child just recently was approved for SSI. They automatically take out 1/3 of the total amount since he lives with us.
