Guest guest
Hi Kay, I'm not sure I understand... here in America we are taught to say aluminum just as it's spelled. "ah-lu-mi-num" Emphasis on the "lu". (pronounced "loo") Short "i" on the "MI" part. I've never heard it said "ium" at the end... Now, I knew a man who could not say that word to save his soul... he said: "ah-loon-i-num". Poor thing. He did try, though LOL! I love the English "dialect". British English, that is. Although the "cockney" is a bit hard to follow sometimes. I'm a big fan of British sit-coms. <grin> ~ -- Re: Pronunciation This bothers me greatly, along with spelling. No offence to the American 4Sers amoungst us but their spelling and pronunciation is sometimes incredibly infuriating! Another major culprit are chavs/townies/pikies/trailer trash - whatever you'd like to call them, these people couldn't talk correctly to save their lives despite having a free education! Their inability to talk correctly makes me despair. Rather than a 4s thing I would think this is more a perfectionist/OCD tendency, which would explain why not everybody gets so upset when they hear al-u-min-i-um pronounced a-lum-in-um... just writing about it stresses me lol. Guest guest
Hi Snowy, Just checked in my dictionary and it looks as if it is spelt differently as well - this side of the Atlantic it is spelt (and pronounced) aluminium, whereas the American spelling (and thus pronunciation) is aluminum. Apologies to the US contingent on this list - I assumed it was spelt the same way across the world. Then again there are plenty of other examples. Time to dig out the Bernard Shaw quote: " England and America are two countries separated by a common language " > > >Hi Kay, > >I'm not sure I understand... here in America we are taught to say aluminum >just as it's spelled.
