Guest guest
Hello all, We are back from a refreshing week long trip to Daman. I was told by a few that Daman is not as good as Diu and incomparable to Goa. That is true, there are only two tourist worthy beaches in Daman - Devka and Jampore. Devka beach has a rocky shore and is no good for those wanting to have fun in the sea. However it has a wonderful garden-park where children (and adults) can have lots of fun. Jampore beach is sandy and more scenic - however the water all over Daman is dirty (but cleaner than Mumbai). Daman has 2 water parks, both are good fun for family, a lake resort (Marasol), 2 well kept gardens, churches, and most of all what most Indian tourist places lack - wonderful friendly, helping, people. Every other shop in Daman is a liquor shop - the one that is left out is a bar cum restaurant! Ha ha! I'm joking - but I have never seen as many wine shops in a 72 sq km area as in Daman. A great fish market with a wide variety of reasonably priced fish (you can get 10 medium sized pomfrets for Rs 50 / Rs 50 for 1 kg of Lobster) - even better priced than Calcutta. If the fish market is huge the dry fish market will overwhelm you - literally... Unfortunately what lacks in Daman, is its own " taste " . All of the food served is typically North Indian (tandoori fish, butter chicken, afghani, mughlai, punjabi, etc). And all the breakfast/snacks are South Indian/Gujarati... I decided to befriend some locals there (they are mainly Gujaratis, Bohras, and Christians) just to try out their taste... nothing. Their favorite Pomfret recipe? Seasoned fish (just salt marination for 15 minutes) grilled and eaten with a liberal splattering of lemon and green chutney... A couple of nice local bakeries there with good rich fruit cakes... We had a lot of fun - but it was a culinary disappointment... Just like Kishore had warned me before the trip - You will enjoy Daman most if you don't expect too much from Daman... I shall be putting up the images soon... Ravin.
