Shame in Pune

Just yesterday, I had written how great India has become, and today,

with a heavy heart I have to report this news.

Some 90 or 100 people strong mob raided and ransacked Pune's

Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and destroyed rare manuscripts,

clay and copper tablets from Shivaji's time, tore antique paintings

and broke idol of Ganesha and Shivaji. Many rare artefacts from before

hundreds of years as well as plantain leaves with writings inscribed

on them were also destroyed. The value of the destruction was

inestimable, but put at worth a crore of rupees.

Reading the above, you will say that these Islamic extremists are

terrible. But the perpetrators of this dastardly crime were a Hindu

Unit calling themselves Sambhaji Brigade. The reason being

Lane's book : Shivaji: Hindu Ruler in Islamic India. Some remarks were

made about Shivaji which were unpalatable. The author did his research

at Bhandarkar Institute. Subsequently the author has apologised and

the book withdrawn from the market.

Not satisfied with this, some Shiv Sena activists had just a week ago,

blackened the face of a Sanskrit scholar of this institute and

manhandled him. Again, profuse apologies from the Shiv Sena bosses

followed.

Reading such news I really start to question Munish's assumption that

Talibanization is restricted to Muslim Countries. Mobocracy is

everywhere, and intellectuals are a helpless lot.
