Guest guest
Hello! We've been with Dr G for almost 3 yrs. I've often commented on items posted here. We've had some nice things happen with our 7 yr old son . But now I need some advice and comfort from the congregation of the network. In April, Dr G tried to wean off of the antiviral (blood tests were looking good). Within a month, 's sensitivity to sound reappeared (after a 2 yr lull) and he began to have other addtl sensory issues (flipping books more, playing in sand, more head pressing and need for sensory input). We flew out to see Dr G in June and he boosted the antiviral again. He also changed the SSRI from Celexa to Zoloft. Celexa had been a godsend 1.5 yrs earlier after nasty trials with Prozac and Paxil. My brother is on Zoloft and does well. We figured that 'family bond' might be a good indicator that Zoloft might do well with . In August started with 3/4 pill Zoloft. As you can guess, we had a rough 5-6 wks until the dose took affect. Extra energy; agitated; OCD upped a little esp for toilet flushing. At the end of Sept, Dr G asked us to began the alternating 3/4-1 pill schedule. Toilet OCD continued and it became more aggressive. Biting and scratching have raised their ugly heads. We haven't seen this pair since we removed casein from his diet (casein sends off the wall). We're at our whits end. has become very aggressive esp in school and with toilet flushing. We stopped the ABA program in Sept (after 3.5 yrs). We are currently using a behaviorist to learn how to deal with his behavior (we don't know what is typical behavior and what is socially unacceptable behavior). We told Dr G all of this at the last tele consult and he feels it's a discipline problem. At this point, I don't feel it is.I think it's the Zoloft. I see go from Jekyll to Hyde at a flush of a toilet or when a demand is placed upon him. I have marks on my hands where he's bitten and scratched me. did have a sinus infection about 1.5 wks ago. Dr G feels this may be influencing or affecting his mood. My first thought is to call the office again on Monday and tell them again what's going on. I'd rather have be on Celexa and be semi unfocused that be on Zoloft and use people as chew toys. Have any of you had this experience on Zoloft? did you wait it out? how long did it take? I don't think Zoloft has lactose - I've heard Paxil and Celexa do. I " ve been doing some research on Zoloft and am quite concern about what I'm reading. Is this the storm before the calm? Any advice is welcomed as this has me very depressed. doris land
Guest guest
doris, you see you child every day and you have a much better sense of this than Dr. G . We had a similar experience and I regret we dragged out a trial of celexa with geoges for over three months when it was evident from one week that we were off course. Zoloft was also a nightmare for us. Let's face it when the anger, obessesions and tensions are that high there is not a chance in hell is going to be learning. Be insistent. Good luck. zoloft and aggression Hello! We've been with Dr G for almost 3 yrs. I've often commented on items posted here. We've had some nice things happen with our 7 yr old son . Guest guest
Hi Doris, I sure am sorry. From your post it looked like the problem was more about the antivirals that the SSRI's. I don't know a lot about how SSRI's work, but can't you just switch back to Celexa? I would fax the office first thing Monday. zoloft and aggression > Hello! > We've been with Dr G for almost 3 yrs. Maybe the zoloft just doesn't agree with him. I know my typical daughter's behavior went out of control on celexa, because it did not agree with her. She developed sound sensitivity and a lot of sensory problems, and at times appeared to have a lot of the symptoms of autism, although she is not autistic. My son does wonderfully on zoloft, but all kids are different. Matching the right ssri with the child can be tough. It would be interesting to see what happens if you took the SSRI away, or changed it, for a few weeks. Sharon :-)
Guest guest
Hi Dorris, I just went thru the exact same issues with my son and zoloft. We finally took him off of it about 1 month ago and I have my bright, sweet child back again. What a nightmare! It seemed at first the med was working (less OCD, spaciness, more pretend play) and then slowly things got way out of control. Kellen stopped using the toilet, starting hitting me (something he has NEVER, EVER done), started running away from me, getting out of bed and running around like crazy, become completely unfocused, and became even more spacy!! He became very disobediant (doing the opposite of everything we would say or ask of him)!! I am kicking myself that I didn't realize sooner this was the zoloft (Dr. G also thought it was more of a developmental, discipline issue) but now after having him off the meds for a month I am 100% certain. yea, we are even starting to use the potty again. Dr. G said on our last visit that Kellen might be one of those kids that the SSRI just doesn't work for. (This was our 3rd Paxil, celexa, zoloft) Kel is doing so much better right now I don't think I will ever go down the SSRI path for him again!! I am sure it works beautifully for a lot of the kids but just wanted you to know we had a real rough go of it and now we are doing much better and back on track!! Good luck, trust your instincts!! a
