Hi ,

We started at 250mg twice a day (every 12 hours) for the first 3 days,

then we increased the dose to 250mg three times a day (every 8 hours).

Hope this helps.

My son is 3.5 years, weighs 29-30 pounds and gets 500 mg per day (split into 3 doses).

You asked about how to give it. If your son will swallow part of the tablet (split with a pill splitter or cut with a knife), that's how I would do it. I got my son to swallow one, but it was traumatic. He might get better with practice. Instead, I dissolve a tablet overnight in 1-1.5 teaspoon of water with a tiny bit of Stevia added. After the whole thing is dissolved I draw it into an oral syringe and give it to him that way. When I've tried crushing the tablet, it gets oily or something and a lot of it ends up stuck to the container. Dissolving it overnight seems to be the best way to get it all out of the container.

dosing

Hi folks:

Just curious about something. It seems that a lot

of folks are on

750mg. Did you start out that high? We're on 500mg

currently, as

prescribed by our DAN doc...

Hi ,

Some people start lower for a few days and then dose up to 750mg (250mg 3xday).

I've

seen the best results so far with this approach although some people have

responded to

250 two times a day. I also know doctors who prescribe 1000mg as well and the

adult

dose is 3000 mg per day, so I think we're at very safe levels but that's

obviously my

opinion.

Is the dosage based on weight?

I thought Valtrex was for Shingles and Herpes?

Is it for any virus then? Obviously it will work on the varicella

(since it is for shingles) but will it work on measles?

I am going to ask my daughters DAN doc about trying Valtrex; her

measles titers are abnormally high.

Ok - I found the prescribing info. Oh joy - its made by GlaxoKline.http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_valtrex.pdf MICROBIOLOGYMechanism of Antiviral Action: Valacyclovir hydrochloride is rapidly converted to acyclovir which has demonstrated antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) both in vitro and in vivo. The inhibitory activity of acyclovir is highly selective due to its affinity for the enzyme thymidine kinase (TK) encoded by HSV and VZV. This viral enzyme converts acyclovir into acyclovir monophosphate, a nucleotide analogue. The monophosphate is further converted into diphosphate by cellular guanylate kinase and into triphosphate by a number of cellular enzymes. In vitro, acyclovir triphosphate stops replication of herpes viral DNA. This is accomplished in 3 ways: 1) competitive inhibition of viral DNA polymerase, 2) incorporation and termination of the growing viral DNA chain, and 3) inactivation of the viral DNA polymerase. The greater antiviral activity of acyclovir against HSV compared to VZV is due to its more efficient phosphorylation by the viral TK.Still don't know if it will help the measels. 1> >> > Hi folks:> > > > Just curious about something. Hi Becky,

I do not think Valtrex is the Rx of choice for measles, but it has been

documented to have

an effect on certain strains of measles. Now did we kill off a virus that was

slowing the

immune system down from suppressing the measles (like CMV)... that's a

possibility too.
