Guest guest
Amy, I I were you, I would look into, you telling him he had a reaction to Peg and then he gave it to him again, that sounds like you might want to talk to someone. Guest guest
Amy, I haven't read the responces (if there are any) yet, but have you tried BabyLax? I know that it says baby but it may just do the trick. I have been through the ringer with my dd, as have many here, and most things work for a week or not at all. But Baby Lax has worked almost every time. It even worked better than an enima. Susie ~ > > Unbelievable is all I can say about the experience we have had in the last 2 weeks. Guest guest
Amy, read every bottle or paper insert before every taking or giving a dose of any med. I do this with every bit of food that we buy too. Trust me that we are all being poisoned on a daily basis. After reading it research every ingredient that you are not sure of. Guest guest
Hi Amy, I really feel for what you're going through. I'm sure others will say this, but I think you need a new doctor!! Re: figuring out if you're dealing with an obstruction. One option that might give you some peace of mind is to feel his tummy yourself. When my daughter gets backed up, I find I can feel the stools through her abdominal wall. I usually gently massage her tummy after she has fallen asleep, and, based on what I feel in there, decide if I think she needs some kind of intervention (which for us at this point is MOM or mineral oil) the next day. Also, an obstruction might cause other symptoms, like a fever and/or abdominal pain...so if you're not seeing that, that might give you some peace of mind also. Guest guest
Thanks everyone for the support on the need for another doctor. I am getting a referral to one on Monday. Our primary care doc agreed he needs to see someone else and is making the referral Monday. The problems is everyone around here takes 3 to 6 months to get into and I have to get him going now. I know you've all felt this so that's why I came here first for advice. Actually, I have a 16 year old daughter who got so disgusted she called a Peds GI office after hours. Got the after hours number and called it and told the operator you need to page the doctor for me. When the doctor got on the phone she said "my brother is having severe constipation and our doctor isn't helping. You need to help him." So that doctor asked if she needed to meet us at the ER.. My daughter said "no but you need to see him right away". The doc said get the referral and call our office. Let me know if it takes to long to get him in.. Can you believe my 16 year old did that?? =) Thanks again, Amy Re: Re: Disgusted! Advice needed. This seriously can't be happening! I too agree that another doctor is needed. Guest guest
Hi Amy-- yes, unless they can tell you, is he cleaned out or is he still dealing with the obstruction, then really not much is "going to work", i.e. you said the oxypowder did seem to help, but then nothing, and so yes, all of these things could be pushing stuff around a lager mass, in which case that mass does need to come out. I hope you will get some answers on Monday. What you could do are castor oil massages... the castor oil, if taken internally, can be a stimulant laxative and can cause a lot of cramping--so instead of giving it orally, some people use it as a massage on the abdomen, and only small amounts are absorbed, The main benefit is not necessarily just the castor oil though, but the gentle massage of the tummy in a clockwise motion. i.e. your hand movements in a clockwise motion, help to stimulate the peristalsis in the GI tract. I would say keep up the bran buds, but maybe back off on the amount he is getting, by a fourth or a half, until you know more on Monday. As far as the too much mag citrate... chances are he will be OK but it was good of you to call them/poison control to talk it over with them. Has he ever done lactulose? I would say try that, but just know that it does mean that he get enough water intake per day to allow it to soften the stool... Xylitol is a natural but different type of sugar, and some people feel that xylitol makes the stool looser for them... you could try getting a bag of xylitol at the grocery store, and then use some to make juices (lemonade, for example) and see if that had any positive impact on the stool. Xylitol also reportedly helps to inhibit the growth of bad bacteria (i.e. that's why they sell a nasal spray form of it), and so it can be somewhat beneficial in that respect. 's Aloe Vera is an aloe vera juice that tastes like water, but you probably have to order it online. Stores sell regular aloe vera but the taste of them generally is not palatable for kids unless you can hide it in a strong juice...but 's is distilled and tastes similar to water, and so it is easy to hide in regular water/juice. Guest guest
Actually I think colace is Docusate Sodium. SOME brands of colace might contain PEG in a small molecular weight, i.e. a lot of meds do contain PEG because it helps to carry ingredients. They said he didn't have hirshsprungs disease. But they also said he was still full of stool in his colon. After ALL that it didn't "clean him out".. I asked if the x-ray was worse than the one before or were we at least making progress? The nurse, who has tried to help me out as much as possible said she'd ask the doctor to compare the x-rays and see what we need to do.. Every day last week I called. The nurse called back every day, but the doctor hadn't compared his x-rays. So I called the appointment desk and asked for an appointment to talk to the doctor face to face. She said sure our first available is on JUNE 28th!!! I kept calling saying he's not going. I know he's really backed up. We need to do something. So on Thursday the GI told the nurse to call us and say he won't have time to check the x-rays until monday and he'll let us know. I said "do you know I'm actually worried we could be talking about an obstruction soon." She said yeah, that will be a bad thing he'd have to be hospitalized with a NG tube and we want to avoid that. NO KIDDING?!?!? ! So I said but the doctor can't look at the x-rays until Monday?? and she said correct. So I said what am I supposed to do in the mean time. She said... Gave him another enema and do the Mag citrate again.. My poor little one what they've put him through because the doctor won't read an x-ray and tell me what the heck to do!! So I do the enema and Mag citrate.. except I forgot I gave a dose and ended up giving one extra dose.. That's 2 bottles in 24 hours. I was freaked and call out the Duke and had them page the ped GI on call. Which so happened to have been our doctor! I sat on the phone for over 15 minutes and he never picked up his page or called me back! I finally hung up and called poison control. I'm beyond furious. AND I have a son who is still constipated or not as bad! NO ONE WILL TELL ME!!! HELP PLEASE!!! I have tried with very little to no success: Mirlax- worked but NO WAY. Oxy-powder- 1 cap a day for a couple days one good stool then nothing again. Milk of Mag. 1 tablespoon of the concentrated (2 of regular) and it's barely helped. colase new to him but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Fiber I have been giving him a bowel of bran buds 15 g of fiber in it a day. Fiber does seem to help him, but it's hard to tell now because we are either having time of complete constipation or complete diarrhea. What is the best Magnesium to use?? How high of a dose can I go?? He's 5 yrs old and weighs 46 lbs. What else do I do?? you guys have been more helpful than my duke doctor. I have no idea if he's cleaned out or still contipated. He barley went today. Please let me know what works for you when your in a crisis?? Thanks so much!! Amy Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell?Check out new cars at Yahoo! Autos. Guest guest
Yes babylax isn't just for a baby... they work on older kids and adults, too. It is called Fleet's BabyLax and it is in a small, light blue box, near the fleet's enema's and other suppositories on the store shelf. Whsmomus wrote: Amy, I haven't read the responces (if there are any) yet, but have you tried BabyLax? I know that it says baby but it may just do the trick. I have been through the ringer with my dd, as have many here, and most things work for a week or not at all. But Baby Lax has worked almost every time. It even worked better than an enima.Susie ~>> Unbelievable is all I can say about the experience we have had in the last 2 weeks. My DS 5 yrs old has had constipation the last 2 to 3 years. Guest guest
Xylitol works very well on Sammy...didn't learn this until he went through half a pack of trident gum. He had been backed up for several days, but had a major cleanout within a day after the gum.m w wrote: Hi Amy-- yes, unless they can tell you, is he cleaned out or is he still dealing with the obstruction, then really not much is "going to work", i.e. you said the oxypowder did seem to help, but then nothing, and so yes, all of these things could be pushing stuff around a lager mass, in which case that mass does need to come out.
