Dear Friends

I have been both saddened and angered to hear that Anand killed himself in

the prime of his youth. I do hope that God will provide enough strength for

his parents to deal with this.

Saddened to see such a precious life go to waste and to imagine what his

family will be going through for the rest of their lives. Angered that, that

almost every single year atleast one student from MGIMS ends his life and we

still have not tried anything to rectify this!!!! I can predict with a lot

of confidence that these losses will still continue in the years to come. 85

batch lost 3. Angered also because last time I tried to bring this topic up

the reply I got on this very site was that " ...most of them who ended their

lives were lunatics... " !!!!

In trying to rationalize on one of the reason this happens as a recurrent

theme is to papraphrase from Deepak Chopra's recent book " The sponateous

fulfilment of Desire- Harnessing the Infinite Power of Coincindence " where

he mentions that from the moment we become aware of the world around us, we

begin to wonder about our place within it... As children, we tend to think

of the future as a clean sheet of paper upon which we can write our own

stories. The possibilities seem endless, and we are energized by the promise

of discovery and the sheer pleasure of living immersed in so much potential.

But as we grow up, become adults and are " educated " about our limitations,

our view of the future becomes constricted. What once lifted our

imaginations now weighs us down with dread and anxiety. What once felt

boundless becomes narrow and dark...

I strongly believe that when one joins medical school and joining a hostel

at 16-17 yrs of age the person is coming from the very protected environment

of home. At this time the person has not even begun to mature as a person

psychologically ( I think that may be one of the reason why people go to

college here in the US before deciding on a career). A sense of poor self

esteem/ poor self worth does creep in creating doubts about what he/ she can

do in life when the combined massive load of studies, building oneself

pychologically and impeding ennui about possible failure and the future

lloms large. The student is stuck looking lost in the woods among the large

trees life moments present but is not able to appreciate the beauty of the

woods (ie life) from afar.

This above writing is an attempt on my part to rationalize on why this

happens on a recurrent theme among students from Sewagram. Inputs on how one

should rectify this would appreciated from the groups ( I did not see any

inputs from the psychiatrists in the group).

Life is Beautiful. Part II to continue...
